Ten Puerto Rico government officials arrested by the FBI

Book - 12-10

Ten high-ranking members of the government of Puerto Rico were recently arrested by the FBI.

The 25-count indictment included bribery, extortion, wire fraud, embezzlement, perjury, and money laundering of US federal funds.

Specifically, the defendants placed family members and friends in key government agency jobs. These “key hires” then doled out government contracts and federal funds, as directed by the defendants.

The key hires also withheld payments to legitimate but “unconnected” contractors, then charged them a “fee” for the release of these payments. In some cases, the fee was 50%.

In this manner, millions of dollars of government funds were systematically embezzled …and in some instances, the embezzlement continued for nearly 20 years.

https://www.fbi.gov/sanjuan/press-releases/2015/ten-individuals-indicted-for-conspiracy-to-commit-federal-programs-bribery-honest-services-wire-fraud-and-extortion

The individuals arrested were:

  1. Anaudi Hernández Pérez, businessman and political fund raiser
  2. Xavier González Calderón, Administrator for the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico
  3. Sally López Martínez, Administrator of the Puerto Rico Workforce Development Administration
  4. Ivonne M. Falcón Nieves, Vice President and Treasurer of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA)
  5. Sonia M. Barreto Colón, Purchasing Director of AAA
  6. Marielis Falcón Nieves, Purchasing Director at AAA
  7. Victor R. Burgos Cotto, Director of Technology for the House of Representatives
  8. Glenn O. Rivera Pizarro, special assistant for administration at the House of Representatives
  9. Javier A. Muñiz Álvarez, businessman
  10. Carlos F. Luna Cruz, businessman

Now in August 2016, the plot has thickened.

The ten defendants are talking…more like singing, loudly and passionately, in order to lighten their own sentences.

The stories range from poisonous oil at PREPA, to drug deals in the Police Department, to fake $400,000 telephone systems.

THE GOVERNMENT PHONES DON’T WORK!

One bit of corruption was so ridiculously inept, that even the government couldn’t cover it up.

As reported by the Puerto Rico press, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Jaime Perelló received $45,000 in cash as a “campaign contribution” arranged by one of the above defendants.

In exchange for this $45,000 “contribution,” the donor received a contract to upgrade the telephone system of the entire Puerto Rico House of Representatives.

Unfortunately, the donor had no experience in this work. So when the job was completed…

The phones did not work!

THE FALL OF THE SPEAKER

This outrageous pay-to-play scheme occurs all over the island of Puerto Rico…but the telephone scam occurred in the Capital building, right under the nose of the island’s press.

This one they couldn’t hide.

Tomorrow we will detail Part II of this story: the Speaker Brought Down by a Bad Telephone.

The attitude of U.S. mainstream media toward Puerto Rico

Book - 12-10

In an immediate response to Monica Puig’s gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, the US mainstream media has shown its true colors.

A few media outlets noted that it was the first gold medal win in history, for the island of Puerto Rico…and then left it at that.

But a few other “major news media” took it a step further. The most offensive was this one from ESPN…

Olympic Gold Medals

We want to thank ESPN, and the US mainstream media, for reminding us that the US did not “liberate” Puerto Rico in 1898…

But instead took 80% of her farmland, 40% of her currency, raised prices by 20%, denied a minimum wage, installed a Jones Act, opened secret FBI files on 100,000 Puerto Ricans, sent hundreds of thousands more off to war, imprisoned and killed her leaders, fabricated a $72 billion “public debt,” and now installed a Financial Control Board.

But guess what?

Monica Puig won the gold medal.

In the near future, many more Puerto Ricans will accomplish amazing things.

Get used to it. Get over it.

Puerto Rico celebrates its first Olympic gold medal, won by Monica Puig

Book - 12-10

All across Puerto Rico, celebrations erupted when Monica Puig won a gold medal in the 2016 Olympics. It is the first gold medal ever won by a Puerto Rican athlete, while representing Puerto Rico.

Monica Puig

The celebrations were passionate.

There is clearly a lot of joy and positive energy in Puerto Rico.

It is an island, and a people, that should be defined by their talents; not by the ignorance and greed of other nations.

There is a huge heart in Puerto Rico.

A heart so big…that it cannot be contained.

Monica Puig wins the first Olympic gold medal for Puerto Rico

Book - 12-10

To a joyful chorus of “¡si se puede!” from her supporters, Monica Puig won a gold medal in the 2016 Olympic Games. The 22-year old tennis star defeated Germany’s Angelique Kerber yesterday, in the women’s singles competition.

Kerber is currently ranked as the #2 female tennis player in the world, but Puig beat her decisively: with poise and gracious humility.

Puig’s victory is also a first…the first Olympic gold medal ever won by a Puerto Rican athlete, while representing Puerto Rico.

Other Puerto Rican athletes have won the gold, but they were competing for the U.S. flag.

Not Puig.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/olympics/monica-puig-wins-tennis-final-and-for-first-time-puerto-rico-has-olympic-gold/2016/08/13/d8b232e8-6156-11e6-9d2f-b1a3564181a1_story.html

To her great credit, Puig was fully aware of the symbolic importance of her victory as a Puerto Rican athlete, representing her own island.

On the tennis court, in her very first interview after winning the gold, Puig said…

“This is for them. I think I united a nation. I just love where I come from.”

Thank you to Monica Puig, for sending this powerful message to her people…Si se puede!

The US declares a “state of emergency” in Puerto Rico due to Zika virus

Book - 12-10

Puerto Rico is officially in a “state of emergency,” declared on August 12 by the Obama administration, because of the Zika virus.

As noted by the New York Times, many island residents believe the “threat from Zika” is exaggerated.

The Times also reported that “it was not clear if the declaration would have much effect.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/13/us/us-declares-zika-an-emergency-in-puerto-rico.html?_r=0

However, one effect that it will have, is to hurt the tourism industry in Puerto Rico.

It is difficult to imagine Puerto Rico as a “preferred” vacation spot, when the US has declared the entire island to be suffering from a “public health emergency.”

http://laptoptravel.blogspot.com/2016/05/zika-virus-creates-huge-concerns-for.html#!/2016/05/zika-virus-creates-huge-concerns-for.html

It is also interesting that, even as the US espouses “concern” over public health in Puerto Rico, and declares a public health “emergency,” this same US has stopped all monitoring of the water supply of Puerto Rico, as of July 1, 2016.
