On August 6, the New York Times published the opinion editorial “Free Puerto Rico, America’s Colony.” 

The editorial detailed the economic abuses which the US has inflicted on Puerto Rico for the past 117 years.

These include the theft of land, an endless series of taxes, a 40% currency devaluation, a tidal wave of overpriced US consumer goods, the Jones Act, and a strangled shipping industry. 

The editorial concluded that independence is the only real solution to these problems in Puerto Rico. 

Within five days, the Times editorial has gone global – shared widely on the internet, and reported internationally in other newspapers.
