The attitude of U.S. mainstream media toward Puerto Rico

Book - 12-10

In an immediate response to Monica Puig’s gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, the US mainstream media has shown its true colors.

A few media outlets noted that it was the first gold medal win in history, for the island of Puerto Rico…and then left it at that.

But a few other “major news media” took it a step further. The most offensive was this one from ESPN…

Olympic Gold Medals

We want to thank ESPN, and the US mainstream media, for reminding us that the US did not “liberate” Puerto Rico in 1898…

But instead took 80% of her farmland, 40% of her currency, raised prices by 20%, denied a minimum wage, installed a Jones Act, opened secret FBI files on 100,000 Puerto Ricans, sent hundreds of thousands more off to war, imprisoned and killed her leaders, fabricated a $72 billion “public debt,” and now installed a Financial Control Board.

But guess what?

Monica Puig won the gold medal.

In the near future, many more Puerto Ricans will accomplish amazing things.

Get used to it. Get over it.

  7. Cultural pride is something to be applauded. In athletics nations don’t compete…ever…it is either individuals or individuals working as a group or so-called team. ESPN should know better. When the smaller opponent stands up to or faces off with another who might seem bigger, better , stronger, swifter, etc. and comes up victorious, that’s the moment sport elevates all of our spirits. To brag, gloat or demean by comparing and contrasting the number of Olympic gold medals won by a native born Puerto Rican tennis player to the many won by the United States, seems small even for a station dedicated to entertaining jocks and fans of jocks. You know them, the ones at the high school cafeteria table who think their shit doesn’t smell and it is because they have gotten used to the smell of sweat and crusty testosterone in their gym socks smelling locker rooms. Anyway, where would American sports be without the Latino and African American Athlete?

I do not think it was to humiliate PR. They are simply counting the gold medal of PR as part of US medals because the island is a US territory.

BUT OF COURSE NOT! THE MANNER IN WHICH THE IMAGE WAS DEPICTED 100% MEANT WHAT YOU THINK IT MEANT. THIS TO ME IS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE EMPATHETIC/SUBSERVIENT/COMPLIANT/AND WHIPPED PR BOWING TO IT’S SOCIOPATHIC MASTER…AND, ASKING FOR MORE.

THE CORRELATION WITH YOUR ONLINE IDENTITY (?) AND WHAT YOU JUST STATED, IS REALLY UNCANNY.

  10. We are a small island, approximately 90 miles from east to west and 30 miles from north to south, with a population of LESS than 3.5 million. You can’t compare that to the U.S. with Puerto Rico. We have 8 Olympic medals without counting this Olympics, and we are proud of them and celebrate each one of them. We have Felix Trinidad, J.J. Barea, Wilfredo Gomez, Monica Puig, Gigi Fernandez, Orlando Cepeda, Ivan Rodriguez, Laurie Hernandez, Jonny Moseley, Carmelo Anthony, Javier Culson, Lisa Fernandez Roberto Clemente, Bernie Williams, Carlos Beltran, Chi-Chi Rodriguez, Hector Camacho, Jorge Posada, Miguel Cotto, the Alomars, Carlos Correa, Yadier Molina, Benicio Del Toro, Erik Estrada, José Ferrer, Jennifer Lopez, Rita Moreno, Rosie Perez, Jimmy Smith, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Zuleika Rivera, José feliciano, Lin-Manuel Miranda and many, many more athletes, actors and musicians. Our politicians have made bad decisions, but that does not define US the puertorican people. We are proud of who we are. Wherever we are, in the states or here.

  11. And please people, don’t ever forget about Jesse Vassallo. He was likely going to be the “showcase” of the Moscow 1980 Summer Olympics for the U.S. Three very doable individual gold medals. He didn’t get to go because of the boycott. Please see an earlier post of mine under the “Historical Overview” tab. It’s a theory. But, the way things have been coming out on how things have been going down between the U.S, and P.R., it’s a theory that is becoming increasingly plausible, in my view.

I can only write what I saw in the 1950’s & what I see now since the 1990’s till today… Cement houses all over: before they were wood & zink: candles & lanters for light: now electricity: before most of the washing of clothes were done in the rivers & bathing too…. We also carried warer for cooking… It was a good happy life but now it’s 100 timess better…. I really dont understand why all the fuss… Regardles of what people & the media say or think: USA have been good to us… Let us take a good look at Cuba: Venezuela: Haitti: zDominican zRepublic: we have it real good with USA… Other wish to be in our shoes…. A lot of people have lost their lives trying to come here or Miami & Calif. Lets be civil & trust that GOOD OLD USA WILL HELP US THRU THIS LIKE ITS DONE IN THE PAST!!!

SYLVIA…READ THE BOOK. READ OTHER PERTINENT BOOKS HELD IN HIGH REGARD BY ACCOMPLISHED ACADEMICS. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY TAKE A RANDOM SAMPLE OF THE ISLANDS’ POPULATION’S COMMENTS TODAY IN 2016 ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP W/THE U.S. ESTABLISHMENT.

IF I HAD THE OFFER TO MAKE A PACT W/THE DEVIL SO THAT I COULD: 1 ) HAVE A CEMENT HOUSE VS A WOODEN ONE OR, 2 ) CANDLES/LATERNS FOR LIGHT VS ELECTRICITY OR, 3 ) BATHE IN A RIVER VS A MUNICIPAL SHOWER OR CARRYING WATER VS GETTING IT FROM THE TAP…WOULD I DO IT?? IF I KNEW AHEAD OF TIME THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE THE EQUIVALENT OF SELLING YOURSELF OUT, I WOULDN’T HAVE DONE IT.

HOWEVER, AWARENESS OF THESE STRINGS ATTACHED TO EACH AND EVERY PR’S SOUL HAS BEEN THERE FOR DECADES. YET, TOO MANY FAVOR “CONVENIENCE” AT WHATEVER THE COST. INCLUDING ONE’S DIGNITY. WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT KIND OF DEVELOPMENT PORTENDS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE ISLAND’S MINDSET?? IF YOU’VE BEEN KEEPING UP WITH ANY OF THESE POSTS…YOU WOULD HAVE HAD YOUR ANSWER A WHILE AGO. YOU HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO.

  15. Does the U.S. mainstream media conduct this comparative analysis ( U.S.A. vs. x-country ) with each and every country in world competing against it in the Olympics ( summer and/or winter ) as it has with PR?? Or, could it be a taunt that the island took this long to get a gold? But, why would you do it? Just because. To reinforce preexisting b.s. notions.

How about the mainstream media doing the same kind of analysis..a much more relevant comparative analysis on ( the before and after the U.S, invasion ) each of the take-aways the U.S. imposed upon the island over the last 118 yrs ( Some of which Remy brought up here. ). Eg; In the categories of: 1 ) The ( stealing ) taking vast majority of prime ag land from the people. 2 ) The imposition of chronic wage disparities that have plagued the island since the invasion. 3 ) Pervasive political terrorism that has beaten down the spirit and will of ( the vast majority ) the individual islanders. 4 ) A double standard when it comes to bottom line issues.

Yes, it can be surprising to the untrained eye ( roughly 95%+ of the N. American population ) that this “minor”” miracle occurred. Taken in that context, it only promotes and reinforces the continued false notion; the idea that the islander’s are a “weak” people, in terms of strength/agility/and motivation. Even with all of those historical, tremendous pressures placed on the islanders ( unlike those same pressures on the U.S. mainland over the past 118 yrs..); they popped one out. But, the U.S. instead of presenting PR’s accomplishment in a dignified and proud fashion… the ESPN presentation reinforces ongoing the scorn and disparagement against the people of the island exhibited by the U.S. establishment; the 1%.

Offer: How about the executives at CNN pick one of themselves out ( And nope, you can’t get a substitute. You’ve got to put your money where your mouth is. And yes, there’s the risk that that person won’t have any teeth left when it’s all said and done ). …their strongest and most able for a 90 second round bare-fisted, anything goes street fight with one of PR’s strongest and most able, that has been feeling the pain ( and isn’t afraid to share it ) for his entire life on the island. Then, after the engagement, we would like to see ESPN through up a similar scorecard for their viewers to see. I know who I’m putting my money on for the gold….

How very small they are as a nation, when they have to put others down.
They are also intimidated with our one.
In the playing of La Borinquena and displaying our flag, they had to accept the reality we are an island nation.
The Olympic and other countries of the world, especially south and central American recognizes it!
