War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony

The war is going strong.

Last week, “War Against All Puerto Ricans” passed the 4 million mark on its web site. It is now averaging over 200,000 views per month.

Beyond the numbers, the web site had some key moments. Here are a few:

“No” to Privatizing the Beaches

On June 24, 2016, the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico tried to pull a fast one. On the last day of session, they quietly approved PC 2853 – which would allow the transfer of beaches in huge coastal areas – including Vieques, Culebra, Condado, Isla Verde, Isabela, Lajas, Cabo Rojo, Guánica and Rincón – into “private” ownership.

We published the story overnight. It received 48,362 views within six hours, and the Facebook version received 314,758 views.

The public opposition was so immediate and strong, that the next day…on June 25… the Puerto Rico Senate tabled the bill.

Luring Puerto Ricans to Alaska

A company called Westward Foods, Inc. was advertising “full-time jobs with lots of overtime” for Puerto Rican workers.

We researched it and found that this job was 12,000 miles away, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in one of the most remote islands of Alaska.

The job paid the Alaska minimum wage of $9.75 an hour, for skinning and cutting fish – 12 hours a day, 7 hours a week.

This was the minimum work week.

At any time, the workers could be required to work back-to-back 18-hour shifts…sometimes for as long as two weeks…and any worker who disagreed, would have to pay their own plane fare home.

We ran a detailed exposé on this, which received 126,859 views on the web site, and 200,601 on Facebook.

Again, the public reaction was so strong, that Westward Foods canceled its “recruitment trip” to Puerto Rico.

Free Oscar López Rvera

As the Obama administration winds down, the pressure is increasing for Obama to release Oscar López Rivera, who has now spent 34 years in federal jail.

A petition was circulating…its federal deadline was Dec. 11 and we needed 100,000 signatures, for the president to even consider it.

Together with Wil Viera – an excellent filmmaker, musician, and community organizer – we produced a video which urged people to sign the petition to free Oscar.

Through our web site and Facebook, we aired this video and sent nearly 2,000 people to the Oscar López Rivera petition.

The overall petition received more than 100,000 signatures by Dec. 1, and will soon be presented to Pres. Obama.

The Rise of Juan Bobo

For nearly two centuries, a vast collection of books, songs, riddles, and folktales have developed around Juan Bobo.

In the early 1900s, the most sophisticated literary journal in Puerto Rico was Juan Bobo, published by Nemesio Canales III – a brilliant attorney, novelist, and the brother of Blanca Canales.

Juan Bobo stands for honesty, common sense, a hatred of hypocrisy…and a love of Puerto Rico.

He is also a magician…able to assume new forms and personae, in order to baffle and outwit the colonial oppressor.

In the tradition of Nemesio Canales, War Against All Puerto Ricans is bringing back Juan Bobo as a symbol of Puerto Rico – stubborn, impertinent and unconquered.

A Forum for our People

Here in the US and even on the island (about 1/3 of our viewers) “War Against All Puerto Ricans” has become a forum for our community, and a voice on behalf of that community.

We are proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in just 20 months…

And we thank all our viewers, for taking us to 4 million!

  1. George Washington,Thomas Jefferson,Laffatette,Lincoln, will had agreed with Don Pedro Albizus Campos on his heroic and historical struggle for freedom and independence. Our struggle is not about braking a nation apart for wanting to separate from it-the confederates in the south-but of colonial people traying to achieve a natural laws: freedom and independence from USA colonialism. 4 millions of readers!
