Monica Puig competes today, at the US Open

Book - 12-10

It is time to say “¡si se puede!” all over again.

Monica Puig plays today at 11 a.m., in the women’s singles tournament of the US Open. She is matched against SaiSai Zheng of China. According to Sports Illustrated, the battle of Puig vs. Zheng is one of the biggest matches in this year’s US Open.

Monica shocked the tennis world just two weeks ago, when she defeated the #2 female tennis player on the planet – Germany’s Angelique Kerber – to win the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

It was a historic victory – the first Olympic gold medal ever won by a Puerto Rican athlete in any sport, while representing Puerto Rico.

Monica’s patriotism was so strong that she waved a Puerto Rican flag after the match, and said in her first interview that “This is for them. I think I united a nation. I just love where I come from.”

The island of Puerto Rico went wild, and gave her a hero’s welcome when she toured the island last week.

Predictably, some US journalists suggested that Monica’s Olympic performance was a “fluke.” For this reason, the US Open will offer a perfect opportunity to show the world Monica’s character, her skills, and our right to consider her a champion.

Here is her biography page in the US Open website.

Here is the match schedule, showing the time and place of Monica’s Round #1 battle with Saisai Zheng from China.

Today at 11 a.m., Monday August 29, Monica Puig may write another chapter in the history books of Puerto Rico.

To Monica we all say – ¡si se puede!

  3. She is truly a class act.
If only the legions of embarrassing USMainland “Celeb-riqueños” and the banderita-waving maggots that support them had a fraction of her genuine self-respect, dignity and REAL pride of place and origin.
Wishing her all the happiness, honor and well-earned homage.
    She deserves it all!
Puerto Rico hasn’t seen one of its own represent it in such a glowing light in a century!
All the best to you Monica.
You have given the next generation someone to respect and emulate.
And you did it all without booty-bouncing’, high 5-in’, fist-bumpin’, blonde wigs, Bentley limousine convertibles and shakin’ your bon-bon.
Everyone is soooooooooooooo proud of you!!!
