Puerto Rico and Cuba…an alliance in the making?

Book - 12-10

On June 20, 2016, Cuba demanded that the US end its 118-year colonial regime in Puerto Rico.

It was made by Humberto Rivero, the Cuban Ambassador to the UN.

Rivero declared that Puerto Rico is headed for “a severe humanitarian crisis in which food, water and electricity may be rationed, and many lives will be lost.”

Ambassador Rivero denounced the US response to this looming crisis. “Instead of triggering a process that would allow Puerto Ricans to develop self-determination and economic control of their own future,” said the Ambassador, the US is imposing a Financial Control Board which “only seeks to force Puerto Rico to pay money to Wall Street and several vulture funds.”

The Ambassador also noted that 118 years of colonial rule have failed to destroy the culture, dignity and nationalist sentiments of the Puerto Rican people.

These sentiments are not limited to the island. They are shared across the United States — and analyzed in its universities, by highly-regarded professors such as Ana M. López at Hostos College.

UN RESOLUTION…FOR THE INDEPENDENCE OF PUERTO RICO

On June 20, Ambassador Rivero acted on his words…by introducing a UN resolution that the United States must create a path to independence for Puerto Rico.

The resolution was supported by representatives from Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Syria and Venezuela…and was approved by the UN Committee of Decolonization.

It was also supported by the Non-Aligned Movement, which incorporates 120 of the 193 UN member nations, and by the 33 nations of the Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC).

All of these nations and organizations agree with Cuba and its Ambassador Rivero: that Puerto Rico should no longer be a territory…a property… a colony of the US.

PUERTO RICAN MISSION IN CUBA

The 50th anniversary of the Puerto Rican mission in Cuba was recently celebrated in Havana. The mission was founded in 1966, to support the continued independence of Cuba.

As part of the anniversary celebration, the mission presented Fidel Castro and his brother Raul with a commemorative medal.

The mission was co-founded in 1966 by Fidel Castro and the historic Puerto Rican independence figure, Juan Mari Brás. For 35 of those years, the Cuban government has advocated for the release of political prisoner Oscar López Rivera.

The Puerto Rican mission in Cuba

Within a few weeks, when a US Financial Control Board assumes complete control of Puerto Rico’s economy and government, the alliance between Cuba and Puerto Rico – and their joint advocacy in the United Nations – will become increasingly vital.

Happy 50th Anniversary to the Puerto Rican mission in Cuba!

Oh, please. Like Cuba really cares. This is just a way to beat their so called”Class enemies” I am a Puerto Rican, and this “Blame everyone else” complex has to stop. Yes Washington could have done thing’s differently, but the Commonwealth Government made its bed. And as every Plebiscite has shown, less than 10% of Puerto Ricans want independence. I served in the Navy,my father was a career US Marine and both of my grandfather’s served. I am very proud to be a Puerto Rican, but i am also proud to be an American.

MICHAEL.. READ THE BOOK. WERE YOU BORN AND/OR RAISED ON THE ISLAND? HAVE YOU TRAVELED THE ISLAND TO MEET AND SPEAK WITH LOCAL.NATIONAL CULTURAL LEADERS?

THE “COMMONWEALTH” TO A CERTAIN EXTENT HAS MADE ITS OWN BED. HOWEVER, THE SHEETS AND THE COMFORTER WERE PROVIDED TO THE ISLANDERS ( AT LEAST AT THE BEGINNING ).. AT GUNPOINT. MEANING, YOU DID THINGS IN A MANNER THAT THEY ( THE U.S. ) WANTED IT DONE. NOT HOW YOU ( PR ) AS A NATION WOULD WANT TO HAVE IT DONE. DO YOU CALL THAT “LOVE?” THE U.S. SYSTEM DID NOT TEACH THIS PART OF HISTORY TO US. DO YOU SEE THE STATES GOING THROUGH THE SAME KINDA CRAP? YOU DON’T. AND THAT’S NOT THE KIND OF “DEMOCRACY” THAT SERVICEMEN/WOMEN WERE CONSCIOUSLY SERVING TO “PROTECT.” IT WAS MORE FASCIST. A LOT MORE. BACK IN YOUR GRANDFATHER’S DAY, THE U.S. TRAINED PEOPLE IN HIS COHORT TO HUNT DOWN AND KILL FASCISTS. GO FIGURE….

AT THE BEGINNING, MOST ISLANDER’S WERE INDEPENDENTS, BECAUSE SPAIN WAS RIGHT ABOUT TO CUT ‘EM LOOSE. THE ISLAND HAD BEEN WORKING HARD TOWARD THAT GOAL FOR AT LEAST A 100YRS PRIOR. AS TIME MOVED FORWARD, ( AFTER THE INVASION ) THE U.S. MILITARY, INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES, FBI, CIA, ETC.. POLITICALLY OPPRESSED THE ISLANDERS TO MOVE AWAY FROM THOUGHTS OF INDEPENDENCE; AS THAT KIND OF THINKING COULD AND STILL CAN GET ONE LITERALLY KILLED. THE METHODS USED WERE ( AND STILL ARE ) PRETTY BAD, AT TIMES. THE GOAL OF ALL THESE AGENCIES WAS TO INTIMIDATE THE POPULATION IN SUCH A MANNER TO GET THEM TO FORCEFULLY ACCEPT THE “COMMONWEALTH” OR COLONY MODEL. SO THEY COULD BE MERCILESSLY EXPLOITED. THAT’S WHAT THE FAT CATS IN D.C. WANTED, AND STILL WANT ( IN A BIG WAY ) TODAY.

LIKE YOU, I’M A VET. AS WAS MY DAD ( KILLED VIET. ERA ) AND GRANDFATHER, ETC. AND, I FELT SIMILARLY AS YOU. NOT ANYMORE. I TAKE PRIDE IN MY PR HERITAGE AND THANKFUL FOR BOTH MY PR AND U.S. UPBRINGING. I DON’T HOLD ANYTHING AGAINST 99% OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. BUT, AFTER HAVING THE WOOL PULLED AWAY FROM MY EYES, NOT JUST OVER PR’S ONGOING PREDICAMENT IN PR, BUT ALSO THE UPHEAVAL IN SO MANY BASELINE CONCERNS ON THE MAINLAND,,,I AM DISDAINFUL OF OUR FEDERAL GOVT. AND ITS SPECIAL INTEREST MASTERS. THERE’S A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE. BY THE PEOPLE, IN BOTH PLACES.

… Puerto Rico … on a path to end the 118-year colonial regime by the USA!!

THE CUBAN AMBASSADOR IS JUST THAT. HE’S A CUBAN. I’M GUESSING THAT HE’S BEEN A LIFELONG CUBAN LIVING ON THE ISLAND OF CUBA. CUBA ITSELF WAS IN A SIMILAR POSITION. A POSITION THAT THEY EXTRICATED THEMSELVES FROM. FROM NO OTHER THAN THE U.S.A. ( KINDA WEIRD ISN’T IT? ) THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT HE DOESN’T SINCERELY FEEL FOR THE PLIGHT OF THE ISLANDER PR’S. IT JUST MEANS THAT IF HE WASN’T BORN AND RAISED ON THE ISLAND AND EXPERIENCED “IT” FIRST HAND..IT’S A WHOLE DIFFERENT MATTER.

COMING FROM ONE THAT’S LIVED IT ( AND IT’S JUST ONE OPINION ): 118 YRS OF COLONIAL RULE MAY NOT HAVE COMPLETELY DESTROYED THE CULTURE AND NATIONAL SENTIMENTS OF THE ISLANDER PR’S. BUT, THE KIND OF OPPRESSION THAT THE U.S. HAS LEVELED ON THE ISLAND HAS SURE TAKEN THE WIND OUT OF MOST OF HER DIGNITY. FOR WITHOUT DIGNITY, THERE IS NO FIGHT. THERE IS NO REAL SENSE OF SELF. YOU’RE OWNED. AND DEEP DOWN INSIDE, YOU HAVE TO KNOW THIS. YOU CAN BE AS NATIONALISTIC AND “CULTURAL” AS YOU WANT ( NYC PR PARADE COMES TO MIND..) . BUT, WITHOUT AN EQUIVALENT ( OR RATHER AN EXCESS AT THIS JUNCTURE ) DOSE OF DIGNITY TO ACTUALLY STAND UP AND DO SOMETHING TO MAKE THAT NATIONALISM AND CULTURAL PRESERVATION ACTUALLY HAVE ANY REA AND LASTING MEANING….IT’S REALLY UP TO THE ISLANDERS THEMSELVES TO DEMAND THIS IN A LOUD, RESOUNDING AND CONVICTED VOICE. AND THEN SOME. HAVING AN AMBASSADOR OR ANYONE ELSE BUT THE PR ISLANDERS MAKING THESE DEMANDS ( AND EXPECTING THAT TO REALLY MEAN ANYTHING ) IS A BIG PART OF THE PROBLEM. AND THOSE THAT BELIEVE AND/OR HANG THEIR HAT ON THESE WORDS BY A CUBAN AMBASSADOR, IS EVEN MORE ABSURD.

THIS AMBASSADOR AND THE MANNER IN WHICH IT’S BEING PRESENTED IN THE PRESS, MAKES IT LOOK LIKE THIS IS A NOVEL AND RECENT PHENOMENAL SENTIMENT EXPRESSED BY THE CUBANS. THE CUBANS HAVE ALWAYS WANTED PR TO BE LIBERATED FROM THE U.S. BUT IT’S NOT UP TO A CUBAN. WHAT THE CUBAN’S DID FOR THEMSELVES ARE WHAT THE PR’S NEED TO DO. NO ONE ELSE IS EVER GOING TO DO IT FOR THEM. SO CURRENTLY, P.R. IS NOT “ON A PATH FOR AN END TO THE 118-YEAR COLONIAL REGIME BY THE USA.” FAR FROM IT. TALKS’ CHEAP. IT’S JUST THIS KIND OF TALK THAT HAS KEPT THE ISLANDER PR’S FROM EXPRESSING THEIR TRUE POTENTIAL. THERE’S NO PROMISE OF FOLLOW THROUGH. JUST TALK. TALK. TALK…

  4. I don’t trust Cuba. Cuba is in bed with Russia and Iran and Obama. I mean, Obama allowed that Promesa Bill. He didn’t hesitate to sign it knowing the consequences. Cuba doesn’t treat their own people right so it’s ironic that they are standing up for P.R. As I see it, their is an underlying agenda and I don’t believe it will ultimately benefit THE PEOPLE. We need to fight the system regarding this board, for the leader of the board ruined NY. NY hates him. He’s not a good economist. He closed so many schools in NY. It’s ridiculous that they would put him on the financial board.

  5. Great blog post. I agree that Puerto Rico should be an independent nation. The ironic thing is, most puerto ricans laugh at me whenever I say this. My boriqueno step dad for one, and my Puerto Rican studies professor in college. My professor gave me a hard time and A D grade on one of my papers, because I continually argued that puerto rico was a territory, and that it should be free. He seemed to prefer the students to either go with the commonwealth status or statehood. I challenged him all the time, because my family members are from the Caribbean.

Your professor should not be imposing his political views on you…or abusing his position of power over you, by skewing the grades depending on whether students agree with him.

He could be FIRED for this.

Perhaps several students, or their parents, should file a complaint.

Cuba under Fidels ruling overcomes many years of poverty avoiding Imperialism from the US and supporting Communism, giving Cuba to keep their Island and not have no country like the US take their resources away and sucker them into a commonwealth status which has been a big lie imposed on Puerto Rico while all their resources had been sucked out making vultures and leaving the Island dry, and it s people to suffer continuos povery since day one !!

    Michael,

Many Americans have been historically abused. They had to FIGHT BACK to end the abuse.

Are you aware how the Foraker act, the Puerto Rico Federal Relations Act, Law 53, the Jones Act (Sec. 27 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920), and both the Supremacy and Territorial clauses of the U.S. Constitution have VICTIMIZED Puerto Rico for the past 118 years?

I respect and salute your service in the Navy. That means a great deal. You served your country…but how is that country serving you?

Did you know that the NAVAL arrangement between the US and Puerto Rico forbids Puerto Rico from negotiating or conducting its own trade relations?

Or that the NAVAL Jones Act of 1920, forces Puerto Ricans to pay 20% — TWENTY PERCENT — more for everything that they consume?

Please remember how I started this letter to you.

Many Americans have been historically abused. They had to FIGHT BACK to end the abuse.
