Ten Puerto Rico government officials arrested by the FBI

Book - 12-10

Ten high-ranking members of the government of Puerto Rico were recently arrested by the FBI.

The 25-count indictment included bribery, extortion, wire fraud, embezzlement, perjury, and money laundering of US federal funds.

Specifically, the defendants placed family members and friends in key government agency jobs. These “key hires” then doled out government contracts and federal funds, as directed by the defendants.

The key hires also withheld payments to legitimate but “unconnected” contractors, then charged them a “fee” for the release of these payments. In some cases, the fee was 50%.

In this manner, millions of dollars of government funds were systematically embezzled …and in some instances, the embezzlement continued for nearly 20 years.

The individuals arrested were:

  1. Anaudi Hernández Pérez, businessman and political fund raiser
  2. Xavier González Calderón, Administrator for the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico
  3. Sally López Martínez, Administrator of the Puerto Rico Workforce Development Administration
  4. Ivonne M. Falcón Nieves, Vice President and Treasurer of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA)
  5. Sonia M. Barreto Colón, Purchasing Director of AAA
  6. Marielis Falcón Nieves, Purchasing Director at AAA
  7. Victor R. Burgos Cotto, Director of Technology for the House of Representatives
  8. Glenn O. Rivera Pizarro, special assistant for administration at the House of Representatives
  9. Javier A. Muñiz Álvarez, businessman
  10. Carlos F. Luna Cruz, businessman

Now in August 2016, the plot has thickened.

The ten defendants are talking…more like singing, loudly and passionately, in order to lighten their own sentences.

The stories range from poisonous oil at PREPA, to drug deals in the Police Department, to fake $400,000 telephone systems.

THE GOVERNMENT PHONES DON’T WORK!

One bit of corruption was so ridiculously inept, that even the government couldn’t cover it up.

As reported by the Puerto Rico press, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Jaime Perelló received $45,000 in cash as a “campaign contribution” arranged by one of the above defendants.

In exchange for this $45,000 “contribution,” the donor received a contract to upgrade the telephone system of the entire Puerto Rico House of Representatives.

Unfortunately, the donor had no experience in this work. So when the job was completed…

The phones did not work!

THE FALL OF THE SPEAKER

This outrageous pay-to-play scheme occurs all over the island of Puerto Rico…but the telephone scam occurred in the Capital building, right under the nose of the island’s press.

This one they couldn’t hide.

Tomorrow we will detail Part II of this story: the Speaker Brought Down by a Bad Telephone.

  3. This is a daily occurrence in the US, and it goes largely unchecked. The FBI comes here to flex it’s muscles and instill in the people a sense that they are indispensable here. I’m all for erradicating corruption…but lets be fair and fought corruption without regard to political parties. I firmly believe that the federal government uses these investigations to manipulate elections on the island. Ever wonder why these big investigations come right before election time?

  7. Apparently, many, many years back a polititian appropriated $300.00 that were supposed to be used for the purchase of an air conditioner.
For this “extremely corrupt act” he was put in jail for several years, “the lesson”: Never be si cheap as to steal only $300.00, “Be big, Think big” and the system will forget about you.
So sad to be writing this and accept that “most everyone” to get into politics/government have only the intention of “STEALING ALL THEY CAN.”
But since the Federal Government does not do nothing, they keep on with the party 🎉🎉🎉

Now if they can get rid of the great American financial control board and the 1920 merchant marine ( Jone’s Act ) “NOW” then I know they really mean business. Otherwise it’s just another camouflage.

Isn’t that what the Federal Control Board just legalized to themselves with PROMESA? Acceptance of bribery, extortion and money laundering from those who wish government contracts and use of federal funds?

YES. I THINK YOU ARE BOTH ON TO IT. IT’S A DISTRACTION, SO THAT YOU GET YOUR EYE OFF THE BALL TO WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT, AND HAPPENING NOW.

  20. Well 20 years is a long time and tell me, why did it take the ever shrewd US authorities to notice what was happening? Is it possible people in the US mainland were getting money under the table to look the other way? I mean really, 20 years and only now are arrests made? It almost seems like an excuse to trash the island because of high government corruption. Sadly the people of Puerto Rico bear no responsibility in this yet the people of the island are paying the price and now all eyes are set on sending tourist dollars to Cuba. I am happy for Cuba, but Puerto Rico’s population is sadly paying for this top level corruption.

  22. An not a fan of PROMESA Financial Control Board but these investigations and arrests were panned and executed by the Us Dept of Justice and FBI with zero input from said Board which is not yet in place. Rampant official corruption happens all over the world, unfortunately. In this instance it does look like PR’s is out of control and maybe it needs external oversight.

  25. I am glad to know that these individuals are not longer available to commit these type of crimes.

They are hurting the real honest people of our island.

They should not be allowed to come back in politics or in government. It is shameful…their behavior should not be acceptable!
