Puerto Ricans are being offered minimum wage jobs…in Alaska

When the Financial Control Board lands on Puerto Rico next month, and “recommends” a minimum wage of $4.25, the US will provide some helpful alternatives. Boricuas can be cops in Camden, teachers in Texas, and grape pickers in Gainesville, New York.

Even Alaska is pitching in. The state has a fish-packing plant in Dutch Harbor, where Puerto Rican workers – both men and women – can gut, peel and pack fish for $9.75 an hour.

Overtime pay is $14.63 an hour.

The minimum wage in Alaska is $9.75 an hour, and the minimum overtime wage is $14.63 an hour.

So Puerto Ricans are being offered jobs 5,600 miles away, at minimum wage, in one of the most expensive states in the country.

The working conditions for these jobs in Alaska, were invented in hell. They are so abusive that they deserve a second article, all to themselves.

Tomorrow you will read about the “jobs” that Puerto Ricans will perform in Alaska.

To put it simply, they are converting Puerto Ricans into slaves…and calling it “economic opportunity.”

After 118 years as a US territory…99 years of US citizenship…after fighting and dying in every US war since World War I…

This is what the US is offering to the people of Puerto Rico.

  3. Who the hell can survive on $4.25 an hour? Also, Puerto Ricans pay 300% more for their electricity than residents of New York City where I live? You have to be kidding! If this is not severe abuse I don’t know what is.

    It’s nothing going new, Congres6di as they please and the International court does nothing about it, I wonder why?. The UN does nothing either, why?

    MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE THIS INSTITUTION ( THE U.N. ) HAS BECOME LIKE SO MANY OTHERS THAT WERE DESIGNED TO REPRESENT THE PEOPLE/MASSES WHEN IT CAME TO INJUSTICE/EQUITY/FAIR TREATMENT AND THE LIKE. THEY’VE BECOME FRONT-MEN FOR OFTEN UNSEEN SPECIAL INTERESTS. THEY’VE ALLOWED THEMSELVES TO BE SO UNETHICALLY, ( AND PROBABLY MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, EVEN ILLEGALLY ) MANIPULATED, WITH NO OVERSIGHT. THERE MAY BE PEOPLE PLACED IN “OVERSIGHT” COMMITTEES/AGENCIES/CABINETS AND THE LIKE. BUT, THESE OVERSIGHT ARMS HAVE BEEN MADE INTO PUPPETS FOR THOSE SAME SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS AS WELL; WHOSE INTEREST USU. GOES AGAINST THE THAT OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC OR THOSE THAT ARE MOST ADVERSELY AFFECTED.

    ON PAPER THE CONGRESS AND THE U.N. STILL CALL THEMSELVES THE CONGRESS AND THE U.N. HOWEVER, THEY’RE FUNCTIONALLY AND THOROUGHLY CORRUPT. SO MUCH SO, THAT THEY’VE LARGELY BECOME AN AGENT THAT GOES AGAINST WHAT THEY ACTUALLY SAY THEY STAND FOR. THEIR ACTIONS/IN-ACTIONS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. AND, NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE ARE DOING ENOUGH TO REMEDY THE SITUATION.

    SOMEONE LIKE BANKI MOON SPENDS ALL MORNING CONDEMNING THIS CONDEMNING THAT. OR, THAT’S HORRIBLE, ETC.. “THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!! ” AT NOON HE MIGHT STRETCH OUT HIS ARMS AND SAY “I’M HUNGRY, I NEED TO GO HAVE LUNCH.” THE LEFT OVERS ON HIS PLATE GO BACK TO THE KITCHEN/DISH AREA TO BE DISPOSED OF, ALONG WITH ALL OF THAT MORNING’S “CONDEMNATIONS..” MEANING, “WE’RE SO SORRY.. , BUT THERE’S NOTHING THAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT. AND WE REALLY HAVEN’T GIVEN A G*D D**N. SO, WHERE ARE WE GOING OUT FOR DINNER TONIGHT?!?”

    CONDEMNATION = ESSENTIALLY, NOTHING’S GOING TO CHANGE ( for the better )

  6. The questions is, Is the cost of living in Alaska higher then Puerto Rico? If not, hey it seems as a good deal for people that are in unemployed and desperate. Its as a temp job. A good time to save until something better comes. Anything is better then a people believing that Puerto Rico become the 51st state would make their situation any better on the island

  10. I worked in The fishing Company of Alaska, Dutch Harbor….very very hard work 18 hours per day…20 days in a row…one day of rest…then again out to fish…not to many people could do this…very good life experience. ..ha ha ha 😉

  11. I would LOVE ❤️👍💕 to be able to have an opportunity to be offered a Job in Alaska .
    This is a place I have always been interested in going to and even living there !
    However I would have never gone on my own behalf unless I had a prior full time or temporary job offer in advance in order to give me some sense of security ahead of time and up front . Nothing wrong with that ! …..
    Alaska is a beautiful land .
    Do you know if they are offering any jobs in Hawaii, as well ?
    No offense or hard feelings .

    These jobs are straight out of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and Emile Zola’s Germinal.

    They’re practically a death trap. Wait till tomorrow’s article.

    I’ll give you a hint…EVERYONE has to work 12 hours a day, seven days a week…and when lots of fish come through — without prior notice — the employees have to work 18-HOUR SHIFTS BACK TO BACK, sometimes for more than a WEEK…as much as THREE WEEKS!

    If you complain, or miss a shift, you can get FIRED on the spot…and they do NOT pay your plane ticket off the island. It’s 800 miles to Anchorage, the nearest airport to make a transfer.

    So if the worker does not have $1,000 for a plane ticket home (for missing a shift) he or she just gets thrown out into a sub-freezing tundra.

    People are falling asleep and getting maimed on the fish-cutting machines.

    Losing a whole arm.

    The nearest hospital is also — you guessed it — 800 miles away.
