FIVE Latinos were shot and killed by cops in the past week…and we barely knew it.*

Book - 12-10

While the police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile occupy the news waves, the shooting death of five Latinos this week slipped by.

Since last Sunday Vinson Ramos, Raul Saavedra-Vargas, Melissa Ventura, Anthony Nuñez and Pedro Villanueva were shot and killed by cops, but only a few local media barely reported their deaths…

Vinson Ramos was shot and killed by three police officers in a Jack-in-the-Box in Bell, CA. He was there with his girlfriend and her son.

http://patch.com/california/southgate-lynwood/knife-wielding-suspect-killed-police-idd-vinson-lee-ramos

Raul Saavedra-Vargas was shot in his car, when he refused to pull over for the police in Reno, NV.

http://heavy.com/news/2016/07/raul-saavedra-vargas-reno-nevada-chicken-wing-fest-shooting-suspect-name-photos-video-van-shot-police-shooting/

Melissa Ventura, a 24-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed by cops in her home in Yuma, AZ. The police were allegedly responding to a “domestic dispute.”

In San Jose, CA the police responded to a “potential suicide” call. They drove to 19-year old Anthony Nuñez’s house and talked to him for 14 minutes. Then they shot and killed him…presumably to prevent the suicide.

Pedro Villanueva was chased by undercover cops in an unmarked vehicle in Fullerton, CA. He had no idea that they were police. When Villanueva turned his car around to face them, they shot him dead in his car. Villanueva was also 19, the same age as Anthony Nunez.

The police reports on all five shootings have been vague. In all five of them, eyewitness testimony differs sharply from the “official version” released by the cops.

LATINO LIVES MATTER, TOO

The deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were tragic and unjustifiable.

Their lives deserve to be commemorated, their deaths investigated, and their killers brought to justice.

Black lives matter.

But there appears to be a narrative in this country, where Latino lives do not exist.

How else can we explain it, when FIVE LATINOS are shot and killed by officers in the same week . . .and the nation is barely aware of it?

The mainstream media, and corporate America, have a great lesson to learn…

Latino lives matter, too.

  8. Considering antiblackness is very strong among Latin America… to the point that many Afro-Latinos (i.e., Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Brazilians, Mexicans, etc.) deny their black diaspora ancestries. Coalition building is absolutely needed. But that will always be stalled if the concern is an ethnocentric one. Hispanics rarely claim to be of color, are held in higher regard than black and brown folks, but clearly are not as high as white in this country. Hispanics will have to abandon their assimilation aims to get right with the oppressed people of color in the U.S. You can’t perpetuate anti-black racism and/or be complicit to white supremacy and its structural racialized oppression affecting all people of color, and be included in the movement to thwart it all for everyone. We have history of working together across ethnicity but those coalitions rarely stay functioning after the specific political project is “resolved.”

  12. The thing is anyone else being killed OTHER Than Afro Americans might not fuel the Rage needed to start a Race WAR which is the Goal. So they don’t sensationalize the other deaths. They might mention them but that is all. The main issue is Black lives. The entire Country is focused on that. There is a lot of infiltration I in groups to instigate and manipulate everyone to force division in the masses. To use entertainers- sports people- ministers to tell people who to endorce who to Vote for is Taking Away Their Rights. Everyone is on some bandwagon. We are being played by the powers That Are And to blind and BRAINWASHED to see it. MY Opinion ONLY

That’s exactly what our government wants so they can declare us out of control and call for Martial Law. Many of you will laugh but think about it in the past years how many of our rights have been taken away. We need to unite as 1 nation and remind our goverment they work for us. “WE THE PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF THEIR BULLSHIT” DIVEDED WE FALL, UNITED WE STAND”

  14. As a Puerto Rican (Latina) I have been forever trying to bring to the public awareness, that us Hispanics have become the low man on the totem pole. For years I have seen insensitivity towards Hispanics especially in Southern States, such as North Carolina from both the Black and White communities. And it’s due to that fact Hispanics, have not raised thier voice as they should. Unless of course your Mexican (nothing against Mexicans of course) then you have all these nonprofit organizations jumping in to help! There are so many different cultures under the Hispanic umbrella. This is not an issue that is effecting one group of Hispanic/Mexican or one Race/African American. It’s a serious issue that’s becoming a serious problem in the killings of People/persons of color. Individual Killings, weither your African American or Hispanic, is not your problem nor mine but OURS. Let’s fight this issue together in solidarity.

  16. US police killings are racially proportionate to US poverty, which makes sense given that most victims of all races are poor. The problem with #BlackLivesMatter is it ignores 3/4 of the problem and it erases the group that’s more likely to be killed by the police, American Indians. We need an inclusive movement for police reform that leaves out none of the victims.

We have forgotten about God & on how to love one another. We have to learn how to love ourselves to be able to love each and every other person. Those police officers that do not carry the Love of God for civilians can and will commit inhumane actions as well equally can any other human being. It’s simple. Love is the answer and God is Love. I’m not preaching I don’t even go to church but once I learned how to love God everything else came easy. Put effort towards prayer not protest. You Matter !!!💕

Ms. Mimi you need a history lesson.Most Hispanics have an overwhelming high percentage of indeginousIndian blood.Do we have some African blood?Sure,but for example in Puerto Rico our ancestors are mostly Taino Indian,followd by European-Spanish,French.Italian,Portugese.Dutch,Germsn.German Jewish,etc,and African.You should know culture and customs comprise what a people are,not solely skin color.That is why Hispanics of color most of them will say they are Hispanic not black.I remember many times BlackAmericans calling my husband,”Mira,mira”,poking fun at him cause he was Puerto Rican and not black ,although he was brown skinned,and I picked on cause I looked as they said a “white girl”.So pls don’t get it twisted.Do we have similar economic-social problems,sure.Because we are both minorities,not the same culturally.So if we were the same we wouldn’t have been jumped on for being Latino.I accept all the cultural groups and ethnicities that make me Latina,and am aware of all the influences we have,especially my Taino Indian background.

If you have an issue, find out how many “Latinos” are protesting before you blame black people? Using us as a scapegoat. Get the fuck outta here!!!

    One day we all will be awaken by The Most High to know who we are and accept one another Latinos, Blacks and Native Indians as true blood brothers and sisters and put us in our rightful position and that’s having dominion over the entire earth and it’s creation.

    We should come together and stop hating and fighting one another because the establishment created this by design to separate and conquer us as a people. They know once we wake-up to the truth and come together, we will be a force to be recognized.

What is it going to take for everyone to understand that it is extremely dangerous for our men and women in uniform to hit the streets and protect our country . The time of protest and resistance is not when you are being detained or questioned by armed police officers .

Media is such a well oiled machine of selective stories that if falls on our shoulders to let people know the Injustice that is also happening to our people. Be they Latin, Pacific Islander, Native American, African-American, etc… It is up to us ALL(all people that are not white) to stand up for ourselves and each other. To help each other & others (white people also) to bring unity and understanding to all those willing and wanting to make change for the better and to bring about TRUE EQUALITY..

  49. Some Facts About deaths by police

    518 people have been shot and killed by police in 2016.
    Of that:

    239 = white,
    127 = black,
    80 = Hispanic,
    23 = classified as other
    49 = not race identified.

    Also, Native Americans are some of the highest statistics of deaths by police.

    In addition, between July 3 and July 9, five Latinos were shot and killed in the U.S. by police, according to TeleSUR, a public news outlet sponsored by various Latin American governments.

    The incidents happened during the same week as the high-profile deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, both black men.

    Why aren’t we mourning Vincent Ramos or Pedro Villanueva or Anthony Nuñez who was killed by police when he was trying to commit suicide?

  50. When Jennifer Lopez says All Lives Matter she is deluged with hate mail. Latinos need to stop enabling this. It is time for the racist rhetoric to stop and we should be focusing on the fact that lives of Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and Latinos are being lost right alongside black lives. The fact that the news agencies refuse to cover this should be reason enough for all these groups and anyone supporting fair media coverage to boycott these news agencies and send them a deluge of letters demanding they stop the yellow journalism of this issue.

  51. Thank you for stating what should be the obvious. The idea that Latinos, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders and others should settle for trickle down civil rights, right behind the lives of blacks or any other culture or race is disgusting. So I proudly say ALL LIVES MATTER, whether or not the so-called “white liberals” or racists of any culture or race think it is appropriate or not. It’s not that I don’t feel for the families of black lives. It’s that I wonder why both blacks and whites have no interest in Latino lives or Pacific Islander lives, or Native American lives murdered by police. And if they do, then why aren’t they discussing the fact that the media is ignoring this. Instead, they say it will come to you, “Wait your turn” in so many words. As a Latina, I find that disgusting!

I also enjoy your blog but I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that murder of the 2 black men have gotten such national attention because there is video evidence. Otherwise it would have been swept under the rug as yet another justifiable shooting. The murder of blacks in the United States by police and them escaping punishment is as old to this country as lynch mobs. Of course Latino Lives Matter but your words actually echo the sentiment of “All Lives Matter” which is a supremacist means of distracting the populace from the fact that black men in America have a target on them. I also wonder of the Latino Lives Matter movement that your positing will address white privilege in the Latino community and encompass black Latinos as well. Because when black Latinos are pulled over by the police, to some officers they are just another black face with a huge target painted on it.
