In a bizarre press conference on July 1, Governor Garcia-Padilla celebrated the pending arrival of a Financial Control Board (FCB) in Puerto Rico.
According to the governor, the FCB will “liberate Puerto Rico” from U.S. hedge funds, and their strangle-hold on the Puerto Rican economy.
“As of today, Puerto Rico is protected from these creditors,” said the governor. “As of today, the creditors cannot sue us to take away our country, or sue us to shut down our government.”
The governor is technically correct…the creditors will not sue Puerto Rico to take away their country, because the FCB will do it for them. There will be no need to sue.
Also, the creditors will not sue to shut down the government of Puerto Rico…because the FCB will already have shut it. So again, there will be no need to sue.
In the end, the only explanation for this ridiculous press conference, is that Gov. Garcia-Padilla has hired himself out as the chief publicist for the FCB.
One week before this strange press conference, on June 24, the governor’s PPD party tried to “privatize” the beaches of Puerto Rico. Later on, the PPD tabled the “private beaches” bill in the Puerto Rico Senate…but the propaganda battle had already been won.
The Puerto Rican legislature put the beaches in play, and thereby eased the way for the FCB and U.S. billionaires – like John Paulson and Nicholas Prouty – to “privatize” those same beaches later on.
Gov. Garcia-Padilla’s press conferences are such an insult to the intelligence, that even a 5-year old can see through them. Garcia-Padilla is such a clumsy publicist, that he almost evokes pity.
But pity is a luxury that Puerto Rico cannot afford.
This governor is doing great harm…because his agenda is not to protect Puerto Rico, but to profit from it.
