Discussion/debate is what this forum is supposed stimulate. That’s what I thought. I DON’T GOT TIME FOR IT. Well, Emmanuel, those that REALLY care will take the “time for it.” It’s only been a nation’s survivability at stake… ALL I CAN SAY BLESS YOUR HEART. Y que Dios te bendiga tambien. Seriously. PUERTO RICO NEEDS ITS INDEPENDENCE WITH ITS OWN AUTONOMY AND SELF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT,IT NEEDS ITS OWN SOVERIGNTY AND RIGHT TO EXIST AS A NATION WITH ITS OWN IDENTITY AND CULTUR. Right! Ok. We agree. I think in their heart of hearts, most would agree. My earlier disagreement with you was on how you phrased it: “When the time’s right..” Emmanuel, the time has “been right” since the invasion in 1898. The time has only “gotten progressively righter” sp?!? since then. You came off as resigned; or “Que sera, sera.” Which is the way it’s always been. Being a rug mat. That’s what I see as the problem.

   However, it hasn’t taken ALL people of Puerto Rico decades or over a CENTURY to understand what happened in 1898, when in a unilateral decision the US sent military forces to invade the Island, kill innocent people coming out of churches and post-offices and closed its eyes to the raping of farm-girls returning home from school in their uniforms—something you will NEVER read about in any of generic “La Tino” academic departments on the US Mainland, where our history doesn’t go beyond 3-D…”drugs”, “dysfunction” and of course, “diaspora”.

23. *****The Price of Culonization…The Short Story of Puerto Rico, Its Corrupt Politicians And Its Undefeated People*****

    I am very heartened to see my Island-bound brothers and sister calling attention to the current dismal fiscal and political status of our Island.

    We have seen these “demonstrations” before and next-to-nothing comes as a result of these earnest and often deadly attempts to call the world’s attention to the Island’s plight. Why?

    Because it’s like singing in the shower…at that moment and to the observer, your voice is loud and booming over the drops of water beating down on you….BUT, when you turn-off the water, grab the towel and step onto the tiled floor, your shower performance is over and has been rendered as significant as a mosquito fart in a hurricane. But I am also aware that even a mosquito can bring down an empire and in this case an historically oppressive, abusive and indifferent overlord bureaucracy.

    I’ve said it before and I will repeat myself again.

    These protests can and should be done, but the audience that REALLY needs to see the outrage of Puerto Rico’s situation and the extent of the economic malaise of the Islanders (and those of us that are “Off-Island”) is the bigger international global community and all of its guardians for a more just, equitable and REALLY “Post-Colonial” approach that will bear political pressure on Uncle Sam.

    The court of world opinion wields a very “Big Stick” and Uncle Sam already has a battered profile on a global level.

    The US government has FOR OVER A CENTURY, given all of us a front-row seat to their hypocrisy, hubris and never-ending self-serving histrionics in defense of the Island’s contemporary “Post-Colonial” (aka “Concubine”) status. So let’s be honest about how effective our demonstrations both on and off the Island have been. They are certainly positive displays of concern, but we are dealing with a gargantuan and monstrous bureaucracy that does not deal with others on the proverbial level playing field.

    On that note…parallel demonstrations MUST be held at the United Nations and before all other world tribunals that hold global membership.

    For Puerto Rico’s situation to be heard by the “bought-and-sold”, “non-representative”, “lobbyist-whoring”, dysfunctional, corrupt and on the verge of civic collapse faux-democracy, is like 3a.m. hooker who has been raped, beaten, robbed and thrown out of the limousine, to expect that the her “date” is going to send her an ambulance to comeback to help her.

    And I’ve said this also…our “Celeb-Riquenos” who have consistently remained quiet throughout the last couple years with the FULL knowledge, or at least much of what has happened on the Island that gave them breath and identity, are STILL indefensible and they need to be reminded that we ALL need their help. They possess the resources and public profile that DEMANDS attention and they should remember that.

    Imagine if you can, our “Celeb-Riqueños” arriving at the White House one-by-one to demand a meeting with this president or “La Hillaria” or “El Trumpo”. S/he will not be able to silence them or make them go away and today’s social media venues are VERY effective at getting attention to any issue or concern.

    And if they are excluded from such a meeting, then they need to remember that slap, when these same White House occupants and their attending lackeys and lobbyists ask them for campaign donations, personal appearance munching on Taco Bell delicacies (our national cuisine, I’ve been told) or to “Dance With Stars”.

    C’mon Celeb-Riqueños” , put down the Victoria’ Secret, Banana Republic and Tiffany catalogs and actually do something of long-term consequence for all 8 MILLION of us, other than waving plastic banderitas from your Bentley convertible every June in Manhattan or walking down the red carpet in Hollywood in 25K designer gowns.

    And spare me any performances of “Evertyteeng Free Een Amereeka!”

    Nothing has been free for us in a CENTURY and the price we have paid collectively in blood, bodies and banderitas and has been extremely high.

    And the Celeb-Riqueños” can all start by putting your names in a public letter to the WORLD published in the NYTimes that outlines the state of Puerto Rico’s current colonial status.

    The age of colonies, colonization and colonials is over…except of course on a pretty island where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet and the Piña Colada fountains never stop flowing.

    En 1972 asistí a la audiencia que celebró el Comité de Descolonización de la ONU, En aquella ocasión, a instancias de Cuba se aprobó, por primera vez, una declaración aplicando la Resolución de la Asamblea General 1514 XV al caso de Puerto Rico. Esa resolución aprobada en 1960, dispone que los países que no han alcanzado su independencia tienen derecho a la libre determinación e independencia. Desde entonces el Comité ha aprobado 34 resoluciones afirmando que para que sea efectivo una libre determinación la potencia interventora debe traspasar todos los poderes al pueblo de Puerto Rico. Las resoluciones aprobadas por el Comité son enviadas a la Asamblea General para su disposición. La Asamblea no ha actuado sobre las resoluciones del Comité, ni ha considerado la recomendación de reconsiderar la Resolución 748 aprobada por la Asamblea de 1953.
    Estados Unidos de América (EAU), no acepta la jurisdicción del Comité de Descolonización sobre Puerto Rico (PR). Alegan que la relación política entre EUA y PR es un asunto doméstico que se resolvió por la Resolución 748. En dicha resolución se releva a EUA de remitir informes anuales sobre PR y sacó el país de la lista de Territorios No Autónomos. Alega, que con el Estado Libre Asociado de PR alcanzó el gobierno propio y por lo tanto su relación con EUA es por mutuo acuerdo. En fin, que hasta hace poco, los EUA no reconocían el estatus colonial de PR y por el contrario desacataban el Derecho Internacional.
    El reclamo de que Puerto Rico había alcanzado gobierno propio en 1952 ha sido refutado por las decisiones del Tribunal Supremo de EUA, las expresiones del Presidente y las acciones del Congreso. El poder ejecutivo y el poder judicial de EUA han expresado que PR es un territorio en el cual el poder último reside en el Congreso de EUA. El Congreso a su vez hace efectivo ese poder mediante una legislación que le impone al gobierno de PR una Junta supra gubernamental. Sin duda, EUA ha aceptado que PR no tiene gobierno propio ni soberanía nacional.
    En conclusión, Puerto Rico es una colonia como lo define el Derecho Internacional o sigue siendo un Territorio No Autónomo de conformidad con el Capítulo XI de la Carta de las Naciones Unidas. Sea uno o lo otro, el gobierno de EUA, debe acudir a la ONU y solicitar que se reconsidere la Resolución 748 a la luz de la 1514 (XV) y las 34 resoluciones del Comité de Descolonización.
