Puerto Ricans flood the streets of San Juan to demand the de-colonization of Puerto Rico

Book - 12-10

Thousands of individuals and organizations swept through San Juan on Saturday, June 18, to demand the immediate de-colonization of Puerto Rico.

The massive crowd convened near the Governor’s mansion, directly in front of the historic La Princesa prison, where Don Pedro Albizu Campos was jailed and tortured for his independence beliefs.

La Princesa is now the Puerto Rico Bureau of Tourism building.

A typical US news report of this overwhelming June 18 event undercounted the crowd, alleging that “hundreds” rather than thousands participated.

It also referred to the marchers and organizers as “bankrupt Puerto Ricans,” and claimed that the island “enjoys independence in most issues, but still answers to Washington on matters of foreign relations.”

Perhaps this reporter was not familiar with the Jones Act, the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, the US Bankruptcy Code, the PROMESA bill, the Financial Control Board, the plenary jurisdiction of US Congress, the insular cases, the Supremacy and Territorial clauses of the US Constitution, or the recent US Supreme Court decisions which applied those two clauses, in declaring that Puerto Rico is a “territorial possession” of the US with no inherent sovereignty in any area (the Sanchez Valle and Franklin Templeton decisions).

INSPIRATION AND COURAGE FROM DON HERIBERTO

The marchers and this writer take great pride, in reporting that a noble man named Heriberto Marín Torres took part in the demonstration.

Don Heriberto played a central role in the Nationalist Revolution of 1950.

He fought bravely in Jayuya on October 30, 1950.

He helped Blanca Canales to raise the Puerto Rican flag and declare the Republic of Puerto Rico.

He went to jail for many years, together with Don Pedro Albizu Campos, for believing in the independence of Puerto Rico.

He wrote Eran Ellos, a brilliant account of his prison experience. Page for page, Eran Ellos is more honest and complete than anything written by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

https://waragainstallpuertoricans.com/2015/11/12/a-treasure-in-puerto-rico-don-heriberto-marin-torres/

When asked about the demonstration, Don Heriberto did not mince words. Summoning a lifetime of experience, he said:

“We are here today to protest against everything the empire is doing to us…but above all, we are demanding independence for Puerto Rico.”

LOOK HERE PEPITO YOU WANT TO ARGUE YOU DO THAT ALONE Sorry, Emmanuel, I’m not arguing. Just making a point based on what you said. If you don’t like it ( which it seems you didn’t.. ), that’s ok. Discussion/debate is what this forum is supposed stimulate. That’s what I thought. I DON’T GOT TIME FOR IT. Well, Emmanuel, those that REALLY care will take the “time for it.” It’s only been a nation’s survivability at stake… ALL I CAN SAY BLESS YOUR HEART. Y que Dios te bendiga tambien. Seriously. PUERTO RICO NEEDS ITS INDEPENDENCE WITH ITS OWN AUTONOMY AND SELF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT,IT NEEDS ITS OWN SOVERIGNTY AND RIGHT TO EXIST AS A NATION WITH ITS OWN IDENTITY AND CULTUR. Right! Ok. We agree. I think in their heart of hearts, most would agree. My earlier disagreement with you was on how you phrased it: “When the time’s right..” Emmanuel, the time has “been right” since the invasion in 1898. The time has only “gotten progressively righter” sp?!? since then. You came off as resigned; or “Que sera, sera.” Which is the way it’s always been. Being a rug mat. That’s what I see as the problem.

Puerto Rico puede lograrlo y ser un fuerte pais cuando el tiempo sea correcto

EMMANUEL, YOUR STATEMENT SUMS UP QUITE PERFECTLY EVERYTHING THAT’S WRONG WITH THE ( HEADS ) VAST MAJORITY OF ISLANDER PR’S AND OTHERS THAT LIVE ELSEWHERE: A CHRONIC FATALISM; A GENETIC MUTATION THAT SOMEHOW TOOK PLACE LONG AGO, WHICH HAS INSIDIOUSLY BEEN TRANSMITTED AS AN APPARENT GENETIC DEFECT TO MUCH OF THE POPULATION. AND IT RUNS SO DEEP, THAT THE THOUGHT TO EVEN QUESTION ITS EXISTENCE NEVER CROSSES ANY OF THOSE PERSON’S MINDS.

WHEN YOU’VE GOT PLENTY OF HISTORICAL EXAMPLES OF WHAT THE OUTCOMES HAVE BEEN OF COLONIALISM, AND ONE CONTINUES TO THINK THAT BY “MAGIC” OR “THE WILL OF GOD” THAT THINGS WILL CHANGE…WHILE ALL THE WHILE THIS SAME PERSON IS COMPLAINING OF HOW BADLY ( INCREASINGLY ) SCREWED THEY ARE…OVER AN EXCESSIVELY LONG TIME FRAME; NO ONE ON THE OUTSIDE IS GOING TO TAKE THAT PERSON SERIOUSLY. EVER. EVER.

I DON’T KNOW EMMANUEL, IF IT WERE ME ON THE ISLAND, I’D BE TRYING TO EFFECTIVELY CHANGE THINGS..BY FIRST SEEING A GOOD SHRINK THAT WOULD HELP ME FIND MY LOST SHADOW ( IN THIS CASE: MY SENSE OF DIGNITY ). IF YOU CAN’T FIND IT, YOU MIGHT AS WELL AS START DIGGING A HOLE NOW TO BURY YOURSELF IN SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE WITNESS TO WHAT’S COMING DOWN THE PIKE. BUT, SOMETHING TELLS ME, EMMANUEL, THAT YOU’RE THE TYPE, LIKE THAT DOG HAVING A COFFEE IN THE CARTOON WITH THE PLACE BURNING DOWN AROUND HIM SAYING: “OH, THAT’S FINE..” PUBLISHED IN A MIAMI PAPER ABOUT A YR AGO. BUT, SOMETHING ALSO TELLS ME THAT THAT’S NOT THE MANNER IN WHICH YOU’D REALLY LIKE TO GO OUT. IF YOU HAD A CHOICE. A CHOICE THAT YOU APPARENTLY THINK THAT YOU DON’T HAVE AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME..

EMMANUEL, YOU’RE WRONG WITH YOUR ASSERTION ABOUT THE INHABITANTS OF THE ISLAND. THEY ARE INHERENTLY A STRONG PEOPLE; AND THE NATION HAS ALWAYS POSSESSED THE POTENTIAL TO SET ITSELF FREE FROM THE BONDAGE OF TERROR AND EMOTIONAL ABUSE IT HAS SUSTAINED FOR SO LONG.

However, it hasn’t taken ALL people of Puerto Rico decades or over a CENTURY to understand what happened in 1898, when in a unilateral decision the US sent military forces to invade the Island, kill innocent people coming out of churches and post-offices and closed its eyes to the raping of farm-girls returning home from school in their uniforms—something you will NEVER read about in any of generic “La Tino” academic departments on the US Mainland, where our history doesn’t go beyond 3-D…”drugs”, “dysfunction” and of course, “diaspora”.

Yes, MANY people in Puerto Rico KNEW even THEN what the future would look like for the Island, the Islanders and even their sons and daughters around the world…

*** to the sweat-shops in Manhattan
*** to the tobacco-rolling factories of Tampa

*** to the assembly lines of Detroit

*** to the Hawaiian pineapple fields where they often worked 20 hour days
*** to NASA, where we have produced the largest contingent of ANY “Hispanic” sub-group in a 2nd language!
*** to the Mainland penal systems where drugs, personal dysfunction and the culture of crime sucked many of us in
*** to the hypnotic after-glow of Broadway’s and Hollywood’s lights, where far too many of us have sold our souls for cheap applause, empty accolades from weekend faux-urbanistas wanting to be “Kewl” just like all NYers are (not).

Yes, there were many Puerto Ricans THEN who knew that the Island’s brutal, sadistic, one-sided, lop-sided, pimp-slave relationship would end tragically and here we are with THAT picture in front of us today.

And ALL of what the “Generation of 1898” (philosophers, poets, writers, social commentators, political analysts and humanists) analyzed and agonized over in their voluntary exiles in Europe (primarily Madrid) HAS come to pass.

But, none of what has happened in Puerto Rico over the last century could have been predicted with absolute specificity, HOWEVER, many Puerto Ricans in their day DID see beyond the red, white and blue confetti that Uncle Sam sprinkled over his tattered, humiliated concubine in 1898.

Their prophetic visions of an endless parade of tap-dancing ravenous American minstrels who would come to the Island to dance WITH their cosmic twins in la Fortaleza, they foresaw

Decolonization,…….THE ARROGANCE!!!…. THERE’S MORE TO IT THAN ARROGANCE. THEY’RE COMMUNICATING TO THE WORLD THAT THE WAY THINGS ARE IS A DONE DEAL, AND HAS BEEN A DONE DEAL FOR A LONG TIME. BUT, MOREOVER, THAT THEY; THE U.S. CONTINGENT, JUST DOESN’T GIVE A CRAP. IN FACT, THEY WERE ALL PROBABLY SITTING ON THE CRAPPER DOWN THE HALL WHEN THE ISSUE OF PR CAME UP.

YES, Phillip Arroyo and Josie Balsac, I Agree with bothof you, “They Are Very Arrogant!!

But we are not going away. YOU DON’T KNOW THAT MARIA. MAYBE THAT’S IN THE U.S. AGENDA. IT’S KINDA SMACKED OF THAT ( MAKING PR’S JUST GO AWAY ) SINCE 1898. HASN’T IT?? Nor disappearing, nor easily assimilated. MARIA, THE U.S. DOESN’T WANT THE PR’S TO BE ASSIMILATED. THEY WANT ISLANDER PR’S JUST WHERE THEY ARE, RIGHT NOW. AND WHERE THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN. We are here! We exists! YES, WE ( AND THE ISLANDER PR’S ) DO. The True Citizens of Borinquen, Antillanos and a reminder to the US, of its hypocrisy. WELL, HE ISLANDER PR’S HAVE DONE A VERY POOR JOB OF REMINDING THE U.S. OF ITS HYPOCRISY, W/A FEW FLEETING EXCEPTIONS. WHY? BECAUSE THINGS HAVEN’T CHANGED.
They can do like the Ostrich and hide it’s head in the sand I’M AFRAID THAT THE ISLANDER PR’S ARE MORE GUILTY OF THIS…, and manipulate the US media to keep the US people ignorant, and ignored our voices. SO, WHAT’S BEEN THE PROBLEM, FOR THE PAST 118 YRS?? HOW WAS IT THAT THE CUBANS WERE ABLE TO GET OUT OF THEIR MESS SO LONG AGO, AND THE PR’S STILL HAVEN’T GOTTEN TO 1ST BASE??
But WE ARE HERE!, NOT GOING ANY WHERE!!

MARIA, THE ONLY WAY THAT THAT NOTION WILL BECOME A SUSTAINED REALITY; ( BECAUSE THERE’S NO GUARANTEE THAT WHAT YOU’VE SAID WILL REMAIN TRUE.. ), IS IF THE PEOPLE OF THE ISLAND ARE EFFECTIVE IN THEIR RESPONSE TO ALL OF IT. AND, SO FAR…SINCE THE 1960’S, THE TRACK RECORD OF THE ISLANDERS HAS BEEN SUBPAR. THE ISLAND NEEDS THE LIKES OF 1000’S OF MARIN’S ( LUIS’S DAD… ) AND PEDRO’S FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. OTHERWISE, PEOPLE WILL BE JUST WASTING THEIR TIME. THE PR’S NEED AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGY AND FOLLOW THROUGH THAT WORKS. TALKS’ CHEAP.

  18. *****The Price of Culonization…The Short Story of Puerto Rico, Its Corrupt Politicians And Its Undefeated People*****

I am very heartened to see my Island-bound brothers and sister calling attention to the current dismal fiscal and political status of our Island.

We have seen these “demonstrations” before and next-to-nothing comes as a result of these earnest and often deadly attempts to call the world’s attention to the Island’s plight. Why?

Because it’s like singing in the shower…at that moment and to the observer, your voice is loud and booming over the drops of water beating down on you….BUT, when you turn-off the water, grab the towel and step onto the tiled floor, your shower performance is over and has been rendered as significant as a mosquito fart in a hurricane. But I am also aware that even a mosquito can bring down an empire and in this case an historically oppressive, abusive and indifferent overlord bureaucracy.

I’ve said it before and I will repeat myself again.

These protests can and should be done, but the audience that REALLY needs to see the outrage of Puerto Rico’s situation and the extent of the economic malaise of the Islanders (and those of us that are “Off-Island”) is the bigger international global community and all of its guardians for a more just, equitable and REALLY “Post-Colonial” approach that will bear political pressure on Uncle Sam.

The court of world opinion wields a very “Big Stick” and Uncle Sam already has a battered profile on a global level.

The US government has FOR OVER A CENTURY, given all of us a front-row seat to their hypocrisy, hubris and never-ending self-serving histrionics in defense of the Island’s contemporary “Post-Colonial” (aka “Concubine”) status. So let’s be honest about how effective our demonstrations both on and off the Island have been. They are certainly positive displays of concern, but we are dealing with a gargantuan and monstrous bureaucracy that does not deal with others on the proverbial level playing field.

On that note…parallel demonstrations MUST be held at the United Nations and before all other world tribunals that hold global membership.

For Puerto Rico’s situation to be heard by the “bought-and-sold”, “non-representative”, “lobbyist-whoring”, dysfunctional, corrupt and on the verge of civic collapse faux-democracy, is like 3a.m. hooker who has been raped, beaten, robbed and thrown out of the limousine, to expect that the her “date” is going to send her an ambulance to comeback to help her.

And I’ve said this also…our “Celeb-Riquenos” who have consistently remained quiet throughout the last couple years with the FULL knowledge, or at least much of what has happened on the Island that gave them breath and identity, are STILL indefensible and they need to be reminded that we ALL need their help. They possess the resources and public profile that DEMANDS attention and they should remember that.

Imagine if you can, our “Celeb-Riqueños” arriving at the White House one-by-one to demand a meeting with this president or “La Hillaria” or “El Trumpo”. S/he will not be able to silence them or make them go away and today’s social media venues are VERY effective at getting attention to any issue or concern.

And if they are excluded from such a meeting, then they need to remember that slap, when these same White House occupants and their attending lackeys and lobbyists ask them for campaign donations, personal appearance munching on Taco Bell delicacies (our national cuisine, I’ve been told) or to “Dance With Stars”.

C’mon Celeb-Riqueños” , put down the Victoria’ Secret, Banana Republic and Tiffany catalogs and actually do something of long-term consequence for all 8 MILLION of us, other than waving plastic banderitas from your Bentley convertible every June in Manhattan or walking down the red carpet in Hollywood in 25K designer gowns.

And spare me any performances of “Evertyteeng Free Een Amereeka!”

Nothing has been free for us in a CENTURY and the price we have paid collectively in blood, bodies and banderitas and has been extremely high.

And the Celeb-Riqueños” can all start by putting your names in a public letter to the WORLD published in the NYTimes that outlines the state of Puerto Rico’s current colonial status.

The age of colonies, colonization and colonials is over…except of course on a pretty island where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet and the Piña Colada fountains never stop flowing.

  19. LA ONU Y PUERTO RICO
Nelson W. Canals, Sociólogo y Juris Doctor
