On three occasions, the U.S. Congress offered to give Puerto Rico its independence.
In 1934, Senator Millard Tydings (D-MD), chairman of the Senate Committee on Territories and Insular Affairs, filed a bill in U.S. Congress that would give Puerto Rico its independence. Sen. Tydings even sent a telegram to Luis Muñoz Marín, and asked for his support.
Every elected official in Puerto Rico supported the Tydings Bill. Everyone in the Partido Popular Democratico (PPD) supported it…everyone but one.
Luis Muñoz Marín opposed it.
He even took a steamer to Washington, D.C., and lobbied against the Tydings Bill. He did it again in 1943 and 1945 – every time that Tydings re-submitted the Independence bill, Muñoz Marín rushed up to Washington to oppose it.
To this day, many people still wonder, why Luis Muñoz Marin opposed the Tydings Bill for Puerto Rico’s independence.
