Puerto Ricans and Latinos buy more books, purchase more movie tickets…and yet are “invisible” Americans
Over the past five years, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) discovered that year after year, Latinos are buying twice as many movie tickets as African-American moviegoers.
And now, corporate America is discovering that Puerto Ricans – and Latinos in general – read books and care about their own history.
This should come as no surprise. A recent article in Publishers Weekly documented that the Borders Bookstore in San Juan, Puerto Rico sold more books than any other bookstore in the entire Borders chain.
Just this one Borders store, in the Plaza Las Americas Mall, grossed $17 million in annual sales: the highest revenue of all 512 Borders stores, throughout the entire world.
And so, the US publishing industry has 17 million reasons for knowing that Puerto Ricans read and buy books, in very large numbers.
Ruben Blades recently wrote how Latinos, even more than African-Americans, are routinely ignored by the Academy Awards, and throughout the entertainment industry in general:

With more Latinos (55 million) than senior citizens (42 million) throughout the entire US, it is time to change this “invisibility” of Latinos…once and for all.

america is the most evil country on planet earth puerto ricans and other latino and afro americans have made white america rich .with our music baseball boxing and alot more. they love to go to latin america to recruit the best baseball players and promote the best boxers which are latinos period. if it wasnt for my blacks and latinos these big time devils would be broke. wether if is the nfl nba mlb college sports and our music which is hip hop.

Now everyone wants to receive merit on racial grounds. If you are “latino” you ahve a “right” to a prize BECAUSE you are “latino”. How more racist can you get? By the way, we purchased so much at the Plaza las Americas store that it went bankrupt. Another bookstore opened in its place and went bankrupt too. Islanders are more worried about baseball players, basketball players, and beauty queens, than about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The Borders at Plaza Las Americas did not go “bankrupt.”
The ENTIRE Borders chain went bankrupt, and so the Plaza store had to close, as well.
The Plaza store was posting 17 MILLION DOLLARS IN ANNUAL REVENUE.
It was THE MOST PROFITABLE BORDERS STORE, out of all 521 Borders stores.
You really need to develop more self-esteem.

I love the reports and all the good news. So clearly we must ask ourselves is it time for us as a “large” community Puerto Rican or latinos do to create this inevitable change. What we need more than anything are leaders to mobilize and organize this change. One definite group of strength within our communities are the churches we attend. What better place to apply your true values and get involved trusting, obediently and sacrificially offering your God given service, talents and gifts. Yes it’s time to do it, the right way. Senator Patrick Moynihan wrote about the “spanish or Puerto Rican Pentecostals” from NYC stating what an asset they were. They were organized, disciplined and took ownership. A credit to any community. Lets lead by example, there is no other way. Let your actions speak louder than your words. My sincere gratitude to all whom have taken the lead to set the path straight for others to follow. Amen.

As Rubén Blades quoted they want our cash, but they don’t want latinos as equal members of the American Society. Same old story, stereotyping is still in place.
