Pedro Albizu Campos: the Movie

War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony

There is a growing interest in making War Against All Puerto Ricans into a movie.

This might be the right time…so that the world can see the history of Puerto Rico, and see how the US has treated it, for the past 117 years.

The true information about Puerto Rico never gets reported…so perhaps the way to fight the dictatorship of a “Financial Control Board,” is with a movie that shows the real history of our island.

The filming of the movie would help our young people to re-discover their own history.

They would be excited that Benicio Del Toro, Jimmy Smits, Rosario Dawson, Rosie Perez, Zoe Saldana, Hector Elizondo, Braulio Castillo Jr., Ruben Blades, Joaquin Phoenix, Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, Bruno Mars, Esai Morales, Andy Garcia and other great talents, might be portraying the heroes and villains of Puerto Rico.

The movie could premiere at the Cannes and Toronto film festivals: to let the whole world understand, the struggles and sacrifice of our people.

Pedro Albizu Campos is a major historical figure: in the same realm as Simón Bolívar, José Martí, and Nelson Mandela. It is time that his story is finally told.

The movie will focus on the life of Don Pedro, and his struggle to liberate Puerto Rico.

The people of the United States – and the whole world – need to understand Pedro Albizu Campos: what he lived, sacrificed, and died for.

If you agree with this, please leave a message here. Your message will be seen by film agents in Los Angeles and New York, who are discussing the possibility of a War Against All Puerto Ricans movie.

While you’re at it, here is a partial cast list for the movie. Who do you think should portray these characters? Who should direct the movie? What songs, and what musicians, should contribute to the soundtrack? Please let us know.

Your book has enlightened me to learn about our history and I am glad to hear that you are embarking on this project the story of Don Pedro must be brought to the mainstream. His story has inspired me to have a sense of purpose and I would very much like to participate and be part of this project. Something more people will want to watch, something captivating. Puerto Rican’s of color should be cast, not white Latinos where are historically inaccurate. And of course, it should be shot in Puerto Rico.

  4. If anything, the book is clear on one point and that is that we are Puerto Rican (period). If anything you clearly point that we can stand on our own as proven through the wars (but not just war only, but in so many other diverse fields). So why not honor our heroes as Puerto Rican heroes (period). We need not add “American” to those words of glory “Puerto Rican heroes”. We are our own people, with our own culture, beliefs, ways of being and our own nation. We are not them. We shine on our own and through our own merits. There is no need to think that we are inferior and better ourselves by adding the word “American” onto the glory that is the Puerto Rican hero.

  5. I yearn for movies of the struggle of our people. They where and are American heros that fought for the same freedom the “immigrants from Europe” fought and stood for. I believe our Puerto Rican American heroes should be taught in class rooms like all other American “heroes” and not be swept under the carpets. Americans think we just ahowed up a the shores begging for free handouts. Many PR gave their lives in U.S. Wars since the beginning of colonial time. One movie is not enough!!! Lets not settle for peanuts and have our history taught in class rooms.

The responsibility lies on is to educate as many of our people with the truth. It’s what I call “cosechando”. Planting one seed of critical thought one person at a time. Eventually one seed will turn to many and will reap out harvest. The Albizu movie must become a reality for all Puertorricans. The people must clamor for it and it shall be done. It’s a matter of time. Keep up with your inquisitive mindset.

  12. I totally agree as a Puertorrican that this story should be told for the world to know and understand what the United States have dinero Puerto Rico and Puertorrican’s. Remember that our colonization started not far from when United States became a nation and that the issues about race was far from solved and to that issue Puertorrican where added. We always was looked at as an inferior race where by the time of these events the KKK was in the White House and the White House was all white and the mentality then was radical and discriminating. All the old laws and rules have not change till this day and we have paid a higher price. The freedom that the United States and the free world enjoy today we fought for it shoulder to shoulder in Central Europe, the pacific, Vietnam and Korea. We deserve the freedom, and complete right to be treated with much dignity.

I think that if every kid of the island would know about their own country’s history, this country could make a change in the future. And a movie would make a great way to show one of our island’s most important era. If there were a movie, I would be the first in line.

Movies force you to pack a lifetime into 2 hours which barely turns out to be good. It’s 2019, and a series with hour episodes is the proper way to tell a story. It gives us more depth and allows for more seasons and telling the story in its entirety. Do not rush the telling of this story. Every chapter should be at least an episode if not more.

  16. I have listen to the audio version of
“War Against Puerto Ricans” twice and I’m getting ready to read the book because I want to see the sources investigated by Mr. Dennis. I’m sure that they are numerous but I bet they will be shocking and fascinating as well. I wonder who would play the part of Vidál Santiago, The shootout at Salón Boricua is definitely going to be a nail biter. Vidál Santiago Diaz was a badass. Who could play Don Pedro? Benício Del Toro has the presence and the range. It would be a matter of making the prosthetics convincing enough to look like Don Pedro. I see Jon Lithgow as Blanton Winship.
This would be a great movie.

Now that I see there is interest I would love to be able to act in it since I am an actress from Puerto Rico. I would also suggest filming everything here on the island and hiering all local talents and local crews as Puertorricans need the work/exposure, after all it is our story. Maybe even suggesting that isntead of a tax exempt, that they just give any residuals or some insentives to our education programs, agriculture ext… What better way to bring this story to light than to actually hire all actors from PR. I love this book and I am very passionate about our history as many. I truly believe this movie will make a difference maybe even help get rid of the Jones act and many more things that don’t let us get back up.

Because of your book my eyes have been opened to the injustice our people have suffered in the past and unfortunately till this day. It has made me want to learn more about Puerto Rico. It has taught me to respect and love Mi patria, historia, cultura, tradiciones and most of all the respect I have for our Flag! We can no longer sit and wait for others to present our struggles truthfully. It is up to us. We must start a GoFundMe site and start the process of financing. We should also call on the Marc Anthony is, JLO’s, RMartin, etc to step up and do something that is positive por la raza.

I pray that this movie is created, for those who still believe in our self determination, this movie would reinvigorate our people’s brave defiance of vassal status.

In some things I am not too shocked because the United States and its people have a big track record of discrimination and racism towards everything indigenous or different. But in the end their intentions have never been towards our best welfare that is why we are in our dire situation today plus the sellouts in the political seats and their agendas. Hopefully one day we can see an independent Puerto Rico living a sovereign life as it should have from the beginning and we can regain a little back of what was stolen from us as people and even more as Boricuas…

So many don’t know the struggle and sacrifice that our people have made. I was ignorant of it myself, until I went to college in 1987. I was enlightened by my fellow classmates involved in student government.

I fell in love with Albizo Campos and what he stood for. I remember telling my mother I wanted to be part of a revolution, to free my people on the island…and she would say, “Muchacha tu estas loca. You will be killed!” She recalled my grandfather going to underground meetings of the Nationalist party. You could be killed if you were part of such a group. She said it was a very scary time for our people.

PLEASE make the movie. I would love to be part of it, even as an extra!

I also read Professor Ferrao’s accusations at Diálogo UPR that this book had a errors and Denis agreeing to release a revised version at the end of the year, so I waited until it was published to get it. I have only read the first chapter and I have to admit, it is a great, very revealing and the references are extensive and based on fact. A movie would DEFINITELY get this information to mainstream media. It would be very appreciated, though, to avoid the so called “movie magic”. Make it as legit to the book as possible, not just based on it. And yes, seeing puertorrican actors like Benicio del Toro play him would be amazing. He already played Che Guevara beautifully. It would be an honor for him to play Albizu. Let his story be told!

He gave his life in exchange for not abandoning his love of a small island and its people. Puerto Ricans deserve to have this man’s life take its rightful place in history, regardless of any political philosophical difference between them. Because until that time Puerto Rico and its people will also find their place in history marginalized.

Many puertorricans (about half) also live in poverty and are victims of very inadequte schooling. The combination of both these factors results in a cultural defficiency in PR with regard to our history and to the lack of local historical films .

The figure of Pedro Albizu Campos is seen negatively due to a history of demonization of the independence movement. The gag law was an antidemocratic act that exemplifies that demonization. Thus this movie can change the average perception of puertorricans with regard to Don Albizu towards one that is more accurate.

Oh but please allow me to correct myself. We do vote for the puppet we send to Washington every four years. He has no vote, so he’s really representing his upper class. And please, don’t produce a film like Cerro Maravilla which for the most part portrayed Boricuas as naive, unintelligent and plebeyos. Boricuas are very proud and resourceful people. We have been under US influence for over 100 years. Yet we have maintained our vernacular and our traditions. Mind you that I’m saying we have been over 107 years under the most influential country in the free world. I by the way I disagree with our great writer Abelardo Diaz Alfaro “el Josco ” still lives. He is at the bottom of “El Farallon” waiting for a new generation to uplift him. He did not commit suicide as a cop out to not have to deal with Anglo Saxon culture. Please take all this into account when depicting Puerto Rico’s history. Just for the record this is not about Yankee go home. I love America, as I was raised in NJ in the sixties. It’s about doing what’s right. It’s about principles and convictions.

  189. The struggle of the island still has presence; making a movie from the book “War Against All Puerto Ricans”, is greatly over due. I’m a first generation daughter born in 1956 to Puerto Rican parents, raised in the Bronx during the sixties and seventies. Puerto Rican women were the first to use the birth control pill, it was provided by the pharmaceutical company for free in order to keep the birth rate down. Witnessing long lines of methadone programs for those on heroin so they can kick their habits. Did they? These programs are still implemented, what have they accomplished to help them? Also, keeping our people suppressed from getting a job or attending universities, the Welfare dept in PR going door to door, offering enrollment for food stamps and cash aid to young mothers and grandmothers… So, yes, I am and we are, READY for this movie! Our forefathers, such as Dr. Ramon Betances, Oscar Collazo, Lolita Lebron, Don Pedro Albizu Campos and Rafael Cancel Miranda have giving themselves to the cause during the fifties to make our lives better. Let their work be shown on silver screen.

  191. This is a must of a movie. I urge all in the project to make this movie. It would educate those unfamiliar with this great man of wisdom, and how he fought to galvanize our great history and the mistreatment of American politics, as well as the exploitation of Capitalism that still persist even at the present moment.

  194. Long overdue. Maybe, once it is released, some Americans will understand that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, and its people, citizens by force; along with the undeniable truths and injustices that have plagued our relationship with the U.S. It will take more than a two hour movie to delve into the whole story. I pray you go through with it , and portray it accurately. No bells and whistles needed, not overly dramatized, as the story will speak for itself. I also support the list of artists that will/might be part of the cast.

  195. I have always been a Puerto Rico history buff. Unfortunately, much of what I learned in school is traditional and conventional history, where we are taught to laud the merits of a Luis Muñoz Marin and despise the antics of revolutionaries such as Don Pedro. I think it is of the utmost importance that we send the message of the real history of Puerto Rico. With over 5 million Puerto Ricans in the diaspora and the 3.5 here on the island, I have no doubt that this movie would be a commercial success. It is a story of human nature and I don’t see why it would not be attractive to other sectors of society, particularly if you get together a stellar cast of Puerto Rican actors who have made it big in Hollywood. I visualize a Lin Manuel Miranda or a Benito del Toro as Don Pedro in a similar scope as we saw him do Che Guevarra. Jeniffer Lopez can perform as Laura Meneses.

This was the first time I had heard of Pedro Albizu Campus and of his fight. After leaving that gathering, I have never felt so proud being a Puerto Rican. The below clip on youtube was the young man’s invitation to his gathering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_hJAk_HKDRM

I am looking forward to this movie. Please keep awakening our people.

  204. “War” as a movie would be exceptional! I have no doubt Nelson’s vision would create a fast paced yet insightful look at Puerto Rico in the early and mid-20th Century. It would also be an essential tool to educate our masses who were not able to purchase a book but are more easily accessible via film. I personally think Albizu should be played by an unknown, someone from the stage, who can fully capture the energy and emotion of Don Pedro.

  205. About Time someone made a movie based on Puerto Rico colonial struggle in hands of the u.s..& I’ve always said that a movie on the story of Don Pedro Albizu Campos should be made. Now the person to play Albizu has to be someone with features like Jimmy Smits or Esai Morales & probably someone like actor Carlos Esteban Fonseca or Luis Guzman could play Don Gilberto Concepción de Gracias & Roselyn Sanchez would be good to play Laura Meneses

  207. Yessss this is a MUST! Honestly Hollywood, its a NO BRAINER! This needs to be exposed! Don’t forget there is lots of talent in PR, so some local actors will do it justice…It is also important to use world renowned actors (obviously) to draw the masses and Americans to watch and learn this history…Benicio del Toro, Amaury Nolasco, Jeimy Osorio, Zoe Saldana, Marc Anthony, etc. Not sure about musicians other than Marc Anthony and Ricky Martin…it may take from the seriousness of this tragic event that is part cause for wast happening right now in the island. This movie will be the voice of millions of Puerto Ricans and also opressed people by the US governent…Wish you the best Denis! Gracias por escribir este libro!

  208. I go to the movies to see films that are important to me, so I don’t go every month, but I sure would run to see “War Against All Puerto Ricans.” Please make sure it has at least 1 “anchor” song like “My Heart Will Go On” was to “Titanic”. Try to get Jennifer Lopez in for a major role, preferably as an advocate, but perhaps as an instigator! Good luck with this great idea. I would pay $13 to see this movie.

  216. Is making “War Against All Puerto Ricans” a good idea? No, it is a great idea!!! What better homage to pay to the Puerto Rican experience than to bring this book to the big screen? Puerto Ricans have been under served even though we have been a part of the American nation ever since we helped her during the Revolutionary War era. Our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, friends and neighbors have all aided, contributed, and help build the great nation that has igmored us. We do not look to right past wrongs against our antecedents, we look to be regarded as equals in the modern world. Our pride in our heritage should be enough to convince anyone to make a film about a man who’s name is still spoken with awe and reverence. Don Pedro’s legacy needs to be shared with the world at large to further show everyone how mankind’s great contributors will always rise to the surface regardless of the outcomes.

  220. This should be an easy discussion. A great leader of his people, perhaps the last one this island nation had trying to assure independence for his people against the most powerful government in the world. For this thousands of his fellow countrymen where subjected to surveillance just for advocating independence. Todays financial crises in the island makes this a timely and long overdue about this misunderstood and mischaracterized leader who stands among the other Latin American greats. Plus i and millions others will watch

  221. Saludos Sr. Nelson Denis
    ¡Felicidades!

I was already filled with pride for being Boricua this book solidified my pride a hundred times over. I always felt a disconnect to my beautiful country because I was born stateside and our people lacked the true history of our people. This book has opened my eyes to the reality of our people as it tells the rich history, the heroes, the warriors, and the atrocities that our people have gone through and how it affects us today. This powerful book has prompted me to learn more about our history. ¡Despierta, Boricua¡ “El yanqui cree que cuando el ser humano se depriva del bollo de pan, se rinde, se humillará y se dejará ser pateado.” -Albizu Campos
