Historic Photo of the Day: Felipe Birriel, el Gigante de Carolina

War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony

Felipe Birriel was 7 feet, 11 inches tall. They called him El Gigante de Carolina.

A gentle and soft-spoken man, he worked in the fields picking fruits and coffee beans. He was also a waterboy, delivering water to sugar cane workers.

Birriel was able to dunk a basketball without leaving the ground.

He lived to the age of 77 and became famous worldwide. The following photo is from a Swedish magazine.

Today, there is a basketball team called Los Gigantes de Carolina (the Carolina Giants), a museum dedicated to his memory, and a street in Carolina called El Paseo Felipe Birriel.
