Pres. Truman and Gov. Piñero
In 1946, Pres. Harry Truman appointed Jesús T. Piñero as the Governor of Puerto Rico.
In 1948, Piñero returned the favor by passing Law 53, aka the Law of the Muzzle.
Law 53 made it a felony to criticize the US, to say or write anything about Puerto Rican independence, to sing La Borinqueña (the national anthem), or to own a Puerto Rican flag.
Law 53 violations were punishable by ten years in jail.
Immediately after signing Law 53, Gov. Piñero took a night flight out of Puerto Rico. He could “not be located” for several days.

I thought Puerto Ricans, as American citizens had the right of freedom of speech! How did this governor think he could get away with this?
