Our Lady Queen of Angels has been there for 130 years, at 113th Street in East Harlem.
Thirteen years before the US invaded Puerto Rico, in 1898, the little church was already there between 2nd and 3rd avenues. In many ways, the entire neighborhood was built around Our Lady Queen of Angels.
Eight years ago in 2007, the Archdiocese of New York closed its doors. The community tried to oppose this but, according to many residents, “no famous or powerful people came out to help us.”
A famous person is visiting East Harlem this week. His name is Pope Francis.
We hope that Pope Francis will support this faithful church of 130 years in East Harlem.
We hope that Pope Francis will re-open Our Lady Queen of Angels.
