Historic Photo of the Day: Puerto Ricans arrested as “Communists” and “suspected Nationalists”

War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony

Immediately after the Nationalist Revolution of October 1950, Gov. Luis Muñoz Marín ordered the mass arrest of anyone in the Nationalist Party.

He also ordered the arrest of anyone affiliated with, or “suspected” of being, a Nationalist.

Gov. Muñoz Marín had passed a law in 1948 – known as Law 53, the Law of the Muzzle or Ley de la Mordaza – which made it a felony to sing La Borinqueña, talk about independence, criticize the US government, or own a Puerto Rican flag.

Under the authority of Law 53, Muñoz Marín demanded the widespread arrest of “suspected” Nationalists.

The men and women you see in the image below, were among the 3,000 “suspects” arrested by Muñoz Marín’s insular police force.

Throughout these arrests, all over the island, the soldiers lined Puerto Ricans up against the walls.

They pointed rifles and machine guns at them, accused them of being Communists, and sent them to jail.

  2. Tell that to our ancestors who on Palm Sunday, March 21, 1937 organized a peaceful march ( with permission) , men woman and children. As soon as they started playing La Borinqueña, they started shooting, clubbing And executing them. The marchers had no weapons at all.Seventeen men, one women, and a seven year old girl were killed, not counting over two hundred who were gravely wounded. The flowers they received was at their wake. All because they wanted to sing La Borinqueña. What planet did they come from to be called the you people????

  3. And what in heavens name do you expected? For Don Luis receive them with a bouquet of flowers and saying THANK YOU NACIONALISTAS??? They had JUST ATTACKED La Fortaleza and other parts of the island with guns. IT WAS NECESSARY. THE FREE VOTE has ALWAYS been the answer to any political changes in a democracy. When are you people going to learn that???
