“Greetings from Puerto Rico…the Welfare State” says the New York Post
The New York Post is the sixth largest newspaper in the US, with a print and digital circulation of over 500,000 readers. The Post has been in continuous circulation for over 200 years.
A newspaper that large, with such a long history, has a great impact on US public opinion. For that reason, a cartoon which it ran in yesterday’s Sunday edition (8/23/2015) is insulting and disturbing.
Here it is:
The cartoon is a postcard with the words “Greetings from Puerto Rico…the Welfare State.”
It shows a hairy and morbidly obese man with the word “DEBT” emblazoned on his potbellied stomach. He lies on a beach wearing, of all things, a bikini.
The bikini is a sly reference to, and ridicule of, the 60 same-sex individuals that were married in Puerto Rico on August 16, 2015.

The bio for “Ramirez” is quite impressive. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice for his cartoons, in 1994 and 2008. He is the senior editor and editorial cartoonist for Investor’s Business Daily. Evidently, Ramirez is a syndicated cartoonist and the Post re-publishes some of his cartoons.
It is wonderful when a Latino succeeds in America, but less wonderful when he does it by stepping on other Latinos.

But those are not the right images for “Ramirez.”
Since the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Ramirez” works for Investor’s Business Daily, his job is to illustrate another corporate reality…the dominant corporate myth…that Puerto Ricans are “free-loading” off America, and that they’re trying to “welch” on the $73 billion public debt.
But it is the corporations that are receiving welfare in Puerto Rico.
Corporate welfare dominates the entire Puerto Rican economy. It is the Puerto Rican economy.
For 117 years, a red carpet has rolled from Wall Street to San Juan.
Sugar cane syndicates…Operation Bootstrap…pharmaceutical companies…John Paulson…the Oppenheimer Fund…Act 20 and Act 22 billionaires…Walmart…Walgreens…the Jones Act…
The list goes on and on. But somehow, the Post chooses to portray the Puerto Rican people – with a per capita income of $16,400 – as the beneficiaries of all this corporate welfare.
The New York Post knows exactly what it is doing. With one image, it slanders and demeans an entire nation…and 500,000 readers are left with a false impression.
This is gutter journalism.
The Post and “Ramirez” should be ashamed.
To the readers of Investor’s Business Daily, “Ramirez” is a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist.
To the people of Puerto Rico, he is a vendepatria.

I was born in Santurce. Sorry I never attended school there. I am proud to be part of the beautiful culture that is Puerto Rico. My parents came here when I was two years old. Want to know all the history that affected out country back then.

As for The Racist Hollywood entertainment COMPLEX A first class action lawsuit as against the top major movie companies to the tune of Billions of dollars paid back to the Federal Govt for chronic and persistent discrimination not hiring Puertorican mogul I. Hollywood with the abilities to greenlight movie scripts written by an for Puertorican actors to be cast . Here’s the discrimination : The moguls that green light scripts I. Hollywood or TV cable shows are white the scripts they accept are written by white a very few black but no Puertorican / Latino written scripts! FiRST CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. Is in order. Look out our old SALSA stars hey we love them right? But The impresarios who sell out music back to us are not Puertoricans and when they do the ticket prices are pretty steep then take the lions share of the profits then pay whats left to our SALSA stars from yesterday they keep recycling. Then the new SALSA stars if they do mint are not appealing ,, Latinos but not Puertorican and have no MASS appeal and finally not by us Puertoricans .As a Muscian of Piano Latin jazz and actor I should have been minted a long time ago because I have TALENT and MASS appeal!

WOW . . . it really shows how much those that do criticizes the cartoon STILL have to grow politically and specially is their own mind. I you as a person can not laugh at yourself, your people, at your country on a cartoonist drawing, YOU have a long road ahead of you. GROW PEOPLE it is a funny and very true cartoon all the adjectives you want to add only show your ignorance. PR IS FAT on Debt and IT IS TRUE . . . S what are you expecting from a cartoonist? Ramirez may be a “Pulitzer Prize winner,” but let’s examine what newspaper his cartoon appeared in… the NY post. I wouldn’t clean my culo with that rag. Ok, now that I vented that frustration, it is absolutely gutter journalism with the potential to mislead hundreds of thousands of people with stereotypes, racism, classism, homophobia, all rolled into one.

It’s unfortunate that a Latin displays such bigotry and ignorance and what “really” goes on in the island and serves the interest of those who dispose the riches and pride of a nation. But what I see is a reflection of who and what he represents, vultures feeding off the misery of others, the laziness of spirit and the decadent behavior that they have. We should not take this personal, since we are above all that. We have proven this more than once in our history and we square miles, Puerto Rico has more talent and pride than more large countries have. I rest my case.

The Island need not ask for an apology but rather ask and get its independence. Then, and only then can it be free to show the world its ingenuity and value through hard work. Puerto Ricans are as strong as any race and should not feel weakened or hurt by negative comments but rather should be positively motivated by them. Show the world hard working Puerto Rican’s are as good as anyone. The only way to improve its own economy is by owning it.

To anyone who knows Puerto Rican people, any comments or cartoons of this nature are pure slander. Puerto Rican people are the best of people, and I say that not having a drop of “Hispanic” blood in me. Keep up the facts to defend yourselves, and remember what President FDR said: “Every knock is a boost.” God bless and keep Puerto Rico and all Puerto Ricans.

This is beyond words for me. Thank you for posting this information. I’m sharing this in myblog, as always, and in my social media accounts. I know this won’t offset the views of 500,00 readers .. but the truth need be told.
You have done and continue to do a great job. I will be here … sharing as much as I can and hoping that some of my readers, not Puerto Ricans, learn the truth about our “Patria” and how it’s misrepresented by the American press, culture and government.
