  1. To the Town Square with Oscar
    Our National Hero
With this slogan, we will meet in all of the 78 town squares in Puerto Rico and the diaspora on the 29th of each month protesting for the liberation of Oscar López Rivera, and for the decolonization of Puerto Rico. Click on the following link to watch a video by Edwin Chungo Molina, the creator of this campaign, explaining his idea: https://youtu.be/Azp6EV6b2L0
United Partners for Puerto Rico Decolonization will be at the Bayamón Town Square from 2 to 4 PM. We invite everyone to join us with your shirt, flag, sign and flyers to inform the public about Oscar, and why he is in prison for the last 34 years?
It is important that the public understands that our Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera has the international right to do whatever is necessary to decolonize Puerto Rico. The United States government is the criminal for maintaining Puerto Rico as its colony for the last 117 years!
We invite you to 3 more peaceful protests that are scheduled permanently throughout the whole year.
    • On the Abolition of Slavery Day, Tuesday, March 22, 2016, from 6 to 8 PM, we will have our 3rd Oscar – Mandela March in Puerto Rico 2016. We will march from the Capitol Building to the United States Court House in Old San Juan.

    • On the day before the United Nations’ (UN) hearing on Puerto Rico decolonization, we will have the 3rd March for Puerto Rico Independence 2016. This march is organized by the Independence Dialogue Table, and we will march over the Dos Hermanos Bridge and through the Condado. We will give more information later.

    • On the very day of the UN hearing about Puerto Rico decolonization, usually on the Monday after Fathers’ Day, we will have our 3rd Oscar – Mandela March in New York City 2016. We will march at 9 AM from Hunter College to the UN. We will stay across the avenue from the UN all day to inform the public about Puerto Rico’s colonial relationship with the United States.
These annual and permanent protests are necessary, because those who have Oscar in jail for his struggle to decolonize his homeland don’t believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL! http://www.TodosUnidosDescolonizarPR.blogspot.com

  2. To Nelson Nieves: Please tone down your emotions. Insulting others for the sake of attracting attention is not good for constructive criticism or higher intellectual conversations. Remember, you (I assume) and I are U.S. citizens. Citizens from the only world super power nation. The U.S. military will squash any armed rebellion from the tiny island of Puerto Rico. Dead people cannot advance the cause, whatever it is: republic or state. I made my decision already. I am pro-statehood. I want P.R. to become the 51st state and have real representation in Congress under the U.S. Constitution. And don’t tell how it would be because nobody knows. Caminante no hay caminio; se hace camino al andar.

  3. Mr Dennis Freytes,
The reason that there has not being enough Puerto Rican for Independence today is because the movement has been repressed. At the beginning of Puerto Rico involved with the USA manyl writers, poets, artist, journalist, and yes many politicians where for Independence. A very large percentage. But continously intimidation and repression has taken a toll on the movement.
And must clarified, USA took over Puerto Rico in 1898, against Puerto Rican wishes. My grandmother was one of the children that ran to the beaches of Fajardo to watch the American entered Puerto Rico. She lived into her 90 and told the story often. She said the people of Fajardo thought the American where coming to liberated them from Spain.
So, the USA ( an English – England base culture) owns Puerto Rico, a colony. But Puerto Rico a Spanish based culture made up of Spanish, African and Taino- belongs to the Puerto Rican

  4. **BASTA YA-LET FREEDOM RING!!!**
WE Puerto Ricans/Hispanics (born US Citizens) demand EQUAL TREATMENT under just laws; equal US Citizenship (with all rights, responsibilities, and benefits); cut Puerto Rico’s old (117 years) federally undemocratic Territorial (Colonial) Shackles!!!

It’s Un-American to have a 2d Class US Citizenship where born US Citizens (including US Veterans that have sacrificed, fought and bled for our United States)– can’t VOTE for their President/ Head of State; don’t have just representation in the Congress that determines their destiny or a permanent US Citizenship or full benefits, under our noble American Flag!

We call upon our FEDERAL GOVERNMENT (President Barack Obama, US Congress, US Federal/Supreme Court)–STOP INSTITUTIONAL DISCRIMINATION, EXCUSES, POLITICAL DISTORTION, AND VEILED OPPRESSION AGAINST– US CITIZENS (INCLUDING US VETERANS)!!!

The US Citizen (with protected individual civil rights) is the fundamental building block of our US Republic with a representative democracy—consent of the governed!

    TAKE ACTION CONCURRENTLY:
    1. PASS H.R. 870, the Puerto Rico Chapter 9 Uniformity Act of 1915 (Debt Restructure– that is fairly applied to other States)
    2. Support Puerto Rico on finding solutions to the fiscal, economic/job, and security problems… This includes treating Puerto Rico (with about 3.7 million US Citizens) fairly (like it treats other US Citizens)!
**New York (with 9 million US Citizens) from 1975-1986 went through a dire fiscal/economic crisis. In this case, the Federal Government–backed up or guaranteed New York’s loans/ bonds (with fees attached) until New York resolved its fiscal problems; was solvent and prosperous again; continued to make mayor contributions to the MACRO US Economy…
    3. Federal Enterprise Zone (FEZ) –Declare Puerto Rico a FEZ—that provides economic development incentives– tied to Job creation, and other Metrics.
    4. 1920 Jones Shipping Act– Legislate to exclude Puerto Rico from this trite Act (which needs to be updated because it’s detrimental to the US MACRO Economy; especially to Puerto Rico).
    5. Federal Oversight: As last resort, if the PR Government does not show internal/local results soon—The Federal Government must positively act to resolve the situation directly…(This is about the suffering People first; not its Government!)

The Federal Government must respect PR’s local plebiscite (Nov. 2012) results:
*End Territorial Status: 54% (958,915); *Statehood: 61+% (824,195); *Independence 5% (74,812)-(has never received more than 5% in the past) … (Total Voted: 78+%) The plebiscite results were clear: a Non-Territorial Status through Statehood won as duly ratified by the PR’s Elections Commission…

Pass (on a non-partisan basis): H.R. 727 –Puerto Rico Statehood Admission Process Act— STATEHOOD: YES or NO (This bill has over 108 Congressional Co-Sponsors; but, US Senate Sponsors are needed to support Equal US Citizenship!)

**2d Alternative—Congress conducts a prompt sanctioned Referendum with defined non-territorial Constitutional Options: STATEHOOD vs INDEPENDENCE (or forms of Independence like: ELA Soberano; Free Associate Republic…)

Puerto Rico– will keep its own Boricua Identity and have Sovereignty (like other States-the Lone Star Republic of Texas…) upon becoming a Full and Equal Member of the US (“Union of States”)!

Moreover, President Obama- the US Justice Department must act to overturn unjust racist laws (Insular Cases-1901-1925+); file a Class Action Equal US Citizenship Law Suit…The Bidwell and Balzac Insular cases (which must be overturned) are what Plessy vs Ferguson (Separate but, equal) was to the American Black Community. We must stop the institutional discrimination against Puerto Ricans!

CONTRIBUTIONS: Loyal US Puerto Ricans/Hispanics (which cherish their US Citizenship), and Ancestors- have contributed greatly to the advanced civilized development of the now US (since 1513)–107 years before the Pilgrims; bravely fought in the US War of Independence and other Wars; have courageously defended our noble US Flag with utmost sacrifice and blood since 1899-WW-I, WW-II, Korea, Vietnam until today… (Includes nine Medal of Honor Winners; the valiant Borinqueneers-US 65th Infantry Regiment-Winners of the Congressional Gold Medal-highest honor US Congress can bestow)!

Puerto Ricans/ Hispanics are part of the multi-ethnic kaleidoscope or intertwined strong threads of sub-groups that make up the resilient fabric of the US Mantel—the land of Free Immigrants with own identities and tolerance! But, united under our US Constitution; and with State Sovereignty (like other States of our Union)— for the good of all!

The US belongs to Puerto Ricans too! Out of about 9 million Puerto Ricans, some 5 million have “voted with their feet”-moved to the States (with more on the way)…. They want to have equal rights, responsibilities, full benefits, better opportunities… To stem the exodus resolve the issues/PR Status.

Now is the time: Patriots of true Grit must stop discrimination; advance our evolved US Democracy– ensure equal protected civil rights for all; end a statutory 2d Class US Citizenship ; cut Puerto Rico’s federally undemocratic Territorial Shackles! With truth and right—WE SHALL OVERCOME!

  5. *INDEPENDENCE FOR US TERRIOTRY (COLONY) OF PUERTO RICO???
Puerto Rico is US Colonial US Territory under the control of Congress–(where the Federal Government institutionally discriminates against Puerto Ricans…, per the Territorial Clause and the racist veiled Insular Cases…)

Independence for Puerto Rico is an honorable status… But, it must be left up to Puerto Ricans (with legal standing) to decide not, be imposed without an alternative by the Independence Party or Others that think they know better than the People (especially the poor) that have to live with the results!

Those for Independence (which is an honorable Status) should take action to demand a Congressional Sanctioned democratic non-territorial Plebiscite (with Constitutionally defined options) on Statehood vs Independence…not, help maintain the impasse by not supporting this…

Let the People decide, not an Elite that wants to impose their ideas on others that will most likely–bring ruin to PR!

INDEPENDENCE MEANS: end of– US Citizenship, Social Security, MEDICARE, MEDICAID, SSI programs for the poor…; end of Federal Funds for Education/University, Transportation/Roads, Emergency Management, Housing, Food Stamps and Other!!!)

The US is a land of Natives and Immigrants (that keep their own kaleidoscope identities and traditions)–that belong to a “Union of States” governed and united by a We the People US Constitution; loyalty to the Union Flag-of our noble US—working for the good of all!

Besides, the US has no official language; it’s the 2d largest Spanish Speaking Country in the World (more Spanish is spoken than in Spain)…!

Stop the political excuses, distortion, demagoguery, speculations; generalizations… Puerto Ricans have voted many times against Independence (that only gets 3-5% of the Vote)! The vast majority cherishes their US Citizenship maintaining their Boricua Identity and State Sovereignty (like the Lone State Republic of Texas and other States have)!

Take democratic action for equal US Citizenship-Statehood for Puerto Rico!!!

  6. Nelson is right on some things, but, not on forcing Independence on Puerto Rico without the consent of US Citizens that cherish their US Citizenship! Besides, in local Plebiscites, over 95% of Puerto Ricans have voted against Independence…; want to be equal US Citizens under the US Flag; end the federally undemocratic territorial status!

We don’t live in the past…these are other times!! In today’s World, it is a free Vote, not the force of arms that should be used to achieve an equal Status…

Facts are: the radical Independentistas have killed many innocent People/Puerto Ricans in the past to include an attack on the White House (Police Officer killed); US Congress; killed un-armed US Navy Personnel in a Bus, blew up 16 Puerto Rico National Guard Jets, shot up and placed bombs in the UPR-ROTC—to include killing Cadet Jacinto Gutierrez (from Ponce) who died in front of me, two Police Officers; shooting up the un-armed UPR Professor of Military Science Car with an AK-47…

To be just, Nelson should call for a democratic Congressionally Sanction Plebiscite, between honorable non-territorial options: Statehood vs Independence (or forms)! The People must decide!
With truth and ACTION-WE SHALL OVERCOME!

  7. Puerto Rico can become an independent country with the help and alliance to the United States. We have the people and brainpower to become a successful independent nation. We have a beautiful culture that we can share with the world and can create our own rule of governance to become economically independent and strong.

the national bourgeois of a foreign country. I invite you to become a freedom fighter for PR so that you can become a proud veteran of the Republic of Puerto Rico.

  9. Statehood will constitute the final blow to PR’s economy as that ” cherished” congressional representation will requiere federal taxation. This will bankrupt whatever the island has left of its economy. The puertorrican people can not afford to pay more taxes. Let the foreign companies established in the island pay their share.PR would become the poorest state in the union totally dependent on federal aid. National independence would provide us with the tools we need to develop our own economy.

  11. To croc60: Did you mean CROC or CROCK? Judging by what you posted, I’d wager on the latter, becuase, what a CROCK you posted. Clearly you do not know, or blatantly disregard the historical struggle for Puerto Rican independence. Or, have not Puerto Ricans been spilling their blood for a Puerto Rican Republic for the past 117 years? Our history is repleat with a great many lives, and much blood spilled of great Puerto Rican men and woman for the cause of our independence and, I assure you, a great many are still willing. The answer to your most insulting question is a resounding YES. I am willing to die for the Republic of Puerto Rico. The question you should ask yourself is, what are you willing to die for?

  12. I disagree with Nelson Denis’ conclusion on the NYT Op/Ed that “Independence is the only solution, for Puerto Rico and the United States.” Becoming the 51st State of the Union is the other option. As a state, Puerto Ricans will get true representation in Congress, which is the center of gravity for any changes to the future of P.R. Independence for P.R. may require the spill of blood. Are you willing or ready to die for the Republic of Puerto Rico?
