United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization Approves Text Supporting Puerto Rico’s “Inalienable Right to Self-Determination”
I tricked you with this headline.
The headline is a year old, published by the United Nations press office on June 23, 2014. You can read the entire press release here:

But the United Nations also tricked you, worse than I did. They trick us every year, with headlines suggesting that independence is “just around the corner” for Puerto Rico.
They’ll trick us this year too – with a headline identical to last year’s, and with language like this:
“The Special Committee on Decolonization today called on the United States to again expedite a process that would allow the people of Puerto Rico to fully exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence, as well as take decisions, in a sovereign manner, to address their economic and social needs.”
And this:
“The Assembly, by other terms, would reaffirm the inalienable right of the people of Puerto Rico to self-determination and independence, and reiterate that the Puerto Rican people constituted a Latin American and Caribbean nation with its own unequivocal national identity.”
The problem is, the U.N. has issued 32 previous resolutions just like this one…and the U.S. government has simply ignored all 32 resolutions.
The U.S. has been able to get away with this, because the “leadership” of Puerto Rico has collaborated in their fraud. Right now, its second-highest elected official is Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi: who favors statehood, and lobbies for it non-stop in Washington, D.C.
The two major parties in Puerto Rico, the PNP and PPD, have been arguing about “statehood” versus “ELA” for the past 48 years.
In a controversial 2012 referendum, a narrow majority voted for “statehood” while another 515,348 voters submitted blank and invalidated ballots.
Last year, even the people who testified before the U.N. Decolonization Committee sent a mixed signal: with Pedro Pierluisi and six others testifying passionately for statehood.
This year 100,000 people sent Pres. Obama a petition demanding the impeachment of Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla, and another 100,000 sent a petition demanding the impeachment of Pedro Pierluisi.
Thanks to this political clown show which has been running for 48 years (even longer than Sabado Gigante) Pres. Obama and the U.S. congress can easily ignore the U.N. Decolonization Committee. They simply say “we need a clear signal from the Puerto Rican people,” knowing that this “clear signal” is nearly impossible to create.
But today…I have a clear signal.
Three days ago, a U.S. congressman proposed that the U.S. establish a “Financial Control Board” to take over the island’s finances, and the island’s government. The New York Times wasted no time in trumpeting this news, all over America.
The clear signal is this: that Puerto Rico should REJECT this financial control board, and REFUSE to pay the $73 billion “public debt” that the U.S. is demanding.
Greece is refusing to pay its public debt, on the ground that it violates international human rights.
Puerto Rico should do the same.

We have a similar problem in Goa. Goa was a portuguese colony under the “non-self governed territory” status in the UN. However India invaded Goa on 18th Dec 1961 and Goa got re-colonized by India in place of Portugal. Goa has been denied Independence due the the UN inaction till date. Goans worldwide are shortly petitioning the UN for Independence from the illegal occupation of their motherland by India against UN mandate.
Hopefully we Goans will get support of all like minded and colonized peoples of the world.

Commemoration of the Rio Piedras Massacre 2015

The commemoration took place at the same place where the events known as the Rio Piedras Massacre happened in Puerto Rico.
The United States (US) government has never been interested in establishing democracies around the world, but of course, that is not what it says. The US is interested in having other governments obey Washington’s desires, so that it can rob them of their resources. That way, these countries will have to buy US goods in order to survive, and that in turn makes its corporations even wealthier. The US is governed for the 1% of her citizens. This is why health services are not a right in the United States, like they are in Cuba and Venezuela. They are the real democracies!
This Rio Piedras Massacre is only one example of US state terrorism. Its purpose was to prevent Puerto Rico from being governed for Puerto Ricans, despite the fact that we have an inalienable right to self-determination and independence. The US government commits a crime by having Puerto Rico as its colony. In 1960, the United Nations (UN) determined democratically that colonialism is a crime against humanity because it threatens world peace. We have been a US colony for the last 117 years.
The fact that the US government has ignored 34 UN resolutions asking it to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico, and has maintained incarcerated for 34 years Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera despite domestic and international pressure to release him, is evidence that it intends to keep Puerto Rico as a colony forever!

US denounces human rights violations only when you disobey
The United States (US) government’s goal is global dominance. Noam Chomsky brilliantly explains this in his book, HEGMONY OR SURVIVAL.
The US must control countries to do this. It must rob them of their resources. A leader who is willing to do what the US government wants, will not only get its support, but it will also never accuse him of any crimes against citizens of his country. As long as US corporations can get huge profits out of that country, American democracy could not be working better!
But, as soon as the leader disobeys, Washington will quickly accuse him of horrible human rights violations and of being a dictator. The US government will quickly replace him with someone who will cooperate with Washington.
This is why President Eisenhower didn’t meet with Fidel Castro after his revolution ousted Cuban dictator and US puppet Batista. US said nothing about Batista’s atrocities against the Cubans. But, as soon as Fidel Castro became the leader that the Cuban People wanted, the US suddenly got very interested in the Cuban People’s human rights, liberties, democracy, and justice for all!
Within 2 months, the US government started planning on how to remove Fidel Castro for somebody it could control. Chomsky’s book goes into the details of that. And after more than 50 years, the US government is still trying to get Cuba under its control again.
Recently, the United Nations (UN) voted once again to lift the US blockade against Cuba. This time, only the United States and Israel want to continue to punish Cuba for not wanting to be controlled by the US government. How more obvious could it be that the US government is still determined to change Cuba’s government to one that will serve US interest!
This is why Puerto Rico decolonization will never happen under US control. Puerto Rico is a colony, because the US government wants it that way. How could anyone realistically believe that the US would reverse something that it unilaterally installed?
To decolonize Puerto Rico, we would have to protest peacefully and permanently for a long time (remember the Cuban blockade) for the US government to respect our inalienable right to self-determination and independence under international law. We must protest tirelessly to insist that the US government comply with the 34 UN resolutions to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.
And when that day happens that we are finally for the very first time decolonized, Washington will be going all out to install a Puerto Rican president who will do exactly whatever the US government wants. If you doubt that, why do you think the US still has a naval station in Cuba?

I appreciate your detailed and thoughtful comment, which is based on a lifetime of experience. I give great credit and respect to that experience.
However (and this is the beauty of good-faith and intelligent discussion, such as yours) we will agree to disagree on one principal point.
Yes, the PPD and PNP are essentially irresponsible and incompetent entities — but it is my firm conviction, that the principal economic malaise is rooted in the colonial relationship between the US and PR. This relationship ENCOURAGES the irresponsibility of those two parties.
As to not desiring independence, this desire is an innate human trait — a trait shared by living organisms in general, not just human beings. Under non-paternalistic conditions, this natural impulse would be more immediately and forcefully manifest.

Of course they are intertwined, but you are implying that somehow the U.S. gov’t has loaned PR all this money and is now demanding payment. I agree with you and stated that the Congress should pass legislation to allow PR to declare bankruptcy. But what I don’t agree with you is that the U.S. is totally responsible for the mess that we are in now. That blame lies totally with the PR gov’t and political parties that just keep borrowing and borrowing. After living here for twenty five years, owning a business here, and dealing with the gov’t agencies and watching the antics of the different administrations trying to manage this island, I have come to the conclusion that they are obviously not up to this task or we wouldn’t be in the place we are right now. Let me be clear…I’m not saying that Puerto Ricans can’t handle their own affairs…I’m saying the people we elected to do this job have failed miserably and I think it is all about corruption, greed and incompetence. And again, if the people of Puerto Rico wanted independence, all they have to do is vote for it and they will get it….but they don’t want it.

I recommend that you step back, and connect the dots on the data set that stands before you.
1. There exists a “public debt” from Puerto Rico to US lending sources
2. The US government is adamantly refusing to extend any bankruptcy protection, or to enact any congressional amendment to the Jones Act territorial clause
3. This congressional amendment WOULD enable Puerto Rico to re-structure and/or re-negotiate some or all of this debt
4. By refusing to enact any Jones Act reform, the US government is effectively saying PRECISELY what I indicated. And that is…
5. That the US government is demanding that Puerto Rico pay the “public debt” of $73 billion
As a conceptual and philosophical matter (and as a matter of real world awareness) you might also wish to re-consider, your unspoken inference that Washington D.C. and Wall Street (ie, the government and financial sectors of the US, at its highest levels) are not profoundly intertwined. Subsequent to FCC v. Citizens United, they are now virtually inseparable.

I am from Vancouver,canada and I supports the people of Puerto Rico fighting for their Independence.The USA forgets that they had to fight for their independence from England. It is hypocritical now for the USA not to let Puerto Rico get its independence. All Puerto Rico Political Prisoners in the USA should be freed.The people of Puerto Rico got the support of the majority of people of the world.Like Patrick Henry said about Independence for the USA. Give Me Liberty or give me Death.That goes for Puerto Rico to.

Puerto Rico should take advantages of our unique circumstances just by saying” , ”my responsibilities are with my people, they are my priority. We are a colony of the USA, that have been denied for 117 years the right for self determination, and independence. Ignoring the UN resolutions over and over again. Imposing a Financial Control Board in Puerto Rico will be an open admission to the world, that the United States of America, knowingly violates International laws by having a colony on the 21st century in the Caribbean. For that reason we wont accept therefore reject the FCB, and we are asking the congress to take over our debts as retributions for using our islands, Vieques, Culebra, Desecheo, main land Puerto Rico as a military base, disposing of our resources, for over 80 years with no compensation what so ever.

You need to get your facts straight…the U.S. is not demanding this payment of $73 billion! This is private debt with bond holders and hedge funds that have loaned the PR government this outrageous sum of money over the past 20 or so years. I think a financial control board is a great idea, because the gov’t here obviously cannot handle its finances. They borrow money to operate! That’s like me borrowing money to live on and paying my bills! How long can it go on? No one wants to make the hard decisions…like laying off about a third of gov’t workers. No one seems to be able to take on the unions…I’m a union person, but this bunch down here is out of control. Our Congress members make more money than all but two of the states, one of which is California. Really?? And if Puerto Ricans wanted their independence, all they have to do is vote for it…but they don’t. They could fix this mess if they really wanted to, but for reasons that I can’t comprehend, they refuse to see the forest for the trees! The best thing the U.S. could do for Puerto Rico is to pass legislation to allow it to declare bankruptcy and reorganize. Unless this happens…and fast….I am afraid we are going to be forced into deciding whether to pay the interest on the bonds…or buy oil for the generators….
