Camaradas El Barrio in New York, New York
2241 First Avenue (115th Street & 1st Avenue, in East Harlem)
The Camaradas event will cover the dramatic 1950 Nationalist revolt including: the assault on La Fortaleza, the attack on Blair House and Pres. Harry Truman, the bombing of Jayuya and Utuado, the gunfight of Salón Boricua, the arrest of 3,000 Puerto Ricans, and the siege of Don Pedro Albizu Campos.
We will present War Against All Puerto Ricans within the broader context of New York City politics, the Nuyorican diaspora, and the growing debate over the political status of Puerto Rico.
We will discuss the role of our federal elected officials, and political parties in Puerto Rico, with respect the ongoing political status question in Puerto Rico.
A special emphasis will be devoted to the Cabotage Law in Puerto Rico (Section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920), Balzac v. Porto Rico and the “US citizenship” of Puerto Ricans, Act 22 and other “tax exemption deals” for billionaire US investors, and the “Junk Bond Status” of Puerto Rico’s $73 billion public debt, and how we got there.
Camaradas is the “Cheers” of El Barrio: a hip Latino restaurant with a warm pub-like atmosphere, where you can always have a great pint of craft beer, cocktails, sangria, food, intelligent conversation and great entertainment. It will be a pleasant, lively, and very informative night.
